~ the last words ~
2go was a south african and nigerian product at the carrier layer. it never reached turkey. ttnet had its own feature-phone era but the messaging on those phones was just sms not a third-party app, and by the time turkish smartphones got common around 2010 the cultural messenger here was already msn drifting toward whatsapp. 2go's world was a different mobile economy.
the app launched in 2007, built by a small group of university of the witwatersrand computer science students in johannesburg. the design was j2me-first because that was what the phone market actually had. on a nokia 6300 or a samsung e250 you could load 2go and chat over gprs cheaply enough that high school students could keep a permanent conversation alive for weeks. by the early 2010s the network claimed over fifty million registered accounts. nigeria became the largest territory, with a peak around ten million users, and lagos secondary schools ran half their group life through 2go group chats.
android arrived cheap a few years later. the same kids who had been on 2go via a nokia got a chinese-built android handset and moved to whatsapp because their parents and cousins were already there. 2go interactive never quite landed the android version that would have held the audience, and by 2018 the platform had lost most of its users. there was no formal shutdown announcement. the company stopped updating the app and the network quietly went dormant.
~ the record ~
| Born | 2007 in johannesburg |
|---|---|
| Peak | around 50 million registered, 10 million in nigeria |
| Killed | around 2019, never formally announced |
| Lifespan | around twelve years of relevance |
| Made by | 2go interactive (pty) ltd |
| Killed by | cheap android smartphones and whatsapp |
~ how it ended ~
the death pattern was the same shape as every other regional-carrier messenger that did not make the jump from j2me to android in time. mxit had it worse two years earlier. 2go got the same lesson late.
what makes 2go specifically interesting is the nigerian peak. in 2014 the platform was reportedly bigger than facebook inside nigeria. the local social internet was built on it for a generation of secondary school students who could not afford a smartphone. there are still people who remember their 2go handle the same way an early msn user in turkey remembers their first hotmail. the product itself has been gone for years.
