~ the goodbye ~
kaizala was india's microsoft chat app. that was not my microsoft chat app. by 2017 i was 33, working in ankara on early uav perception contracts, and the microsoft chat thing on my work laptop was skype for business with the slow gray login screen. kaizala did not run in turkey at meaningful scale because the india-out rollout never got a marketing push toward european enterprise. the only time i looked at it was during a 2019 trip when an indian contractor showed me the polls feature on his phone because he wanted to know if microsoft would ever ship it inside teams.
microsoft kaizala launched out of microsoft garage in india in mid 2017 as a "messaging for work" app aimed at large indian workforces that ran on cheap android phones over patchy 2g and 3g networks. corporate vice president rajiv kumar conceived the project. the brand name is from the marathi phrase "kai zala" meaning "what happened". the design borrowed from whatsapp on the chat side and from the indian-government broadcast workflow on the management side, where a state office could push a survey to a hundred thousand workers and read back tabulated responses.
microsoft expanded the rollout across 28 emerging-market countries in 2018, then opened it globally in april 2019 as a paid microsoft 365 addon. in july 2019 microsoft announced that the kaizala feature set would migrate into teams over the next 12 to 18 months. that was the polite way to say the standalone product was now in wind-down mode. on august 26 2022 microsoft posted a one-year notice. the service shut down on august 31 2023 and the kaizala apps stopped working a few days later as the back-end licenses expired.

~ how it landed ~
the original 2017 india launch was a real success by microsoft india standards. the andhra pradesh state government adopted it for over 70 thousand field staff. a few large indian conglomerates used it for plant-floor reporting, and ngos in rural districts used it to push consent forms and survey responses through the same number a worker already used for whatsapp. the chat layer worked. the polls layer worked too. the file size limits accommodated a 256mb 2g phone. for two years it looked like microsoft might have a real consumer-adjacent product out of india.
the western press treatment of kaizala in 2019 was lukewarm. tech blogs framed it as a whatsapp clone that nobody outside india would download. the truth was that the polls and tasks layer above whatsapp's chat layer was new, and whatsapp itself would not ship anything similar until the much later business api work. by then microsoft had already decided that the future of its work-chat strategy was teams.
~ what it actually shipped ~
the kaizala app on an android phone in 2018 looked like whatsapp with two extra tabs along the bottom. the first extra was action cards, which were polls and "yes no" decision asks shaped into a chat message. the second extra was groups, which were larger than whatsapp groups and had broadcast modes for one-to-many notification at thousands of recipients. the offline-and-2g handling was the more impressive piece. you could compose an action card on a phone with no signal and it would sync the next time the device reached an edge tower.
there was also a kaizala management portal on the web for organization admins who needed to push policy or pull a usage report. the portal connected to azure active directory for tenant identity. that connection is the piece that microsoft really wanted to preserve, since it was the bridge into the broader microsoft 365 license. once teams could host the same identity bridge, kaizala had no architectural reason to stay separate.
~ how it ended ~
the august 2022 retirement post on the microsoft tech community blog framed the closure as a feature unification. kaizala pro chat would migrate into teams. kaizala consumer-style accounts would lose the licensing path. partners selling kaizala deployments were given a year to migrate their clients onto teams. teams itself was supposed to inherit the polls and surveys feature in a future quarter, which it did partially through the forms integration but not at the kaizala-style scale.
august 31 2023 came and the kaizala back-end stopped accepting new sessions. the play store and app store builds remained downloadable for a few weeks afterward but could not log in. the indian state and ngo deployments that had not yet moved found their data archives behind a closing teams migration portal. by the end of 2023 the kaizala.com address redirected to a microsoft teams marketing page. the microsoft garage india site removed the project page from its main listing the next year.
