~ the goodbye ~
i missed smack jeeves. the webcomics scene in the 2005-2015 window sat in the english-language hobbyist internet that i was orbit-adjacent to but did not participate in. the names you would have known if you ran a comic were drunk duck, comic genesis (formerly keenspace), comic fury, and smack jeeves. these were the free hosts where teenagers and twenty-somethings put up sprite comics, sonic comics, manga-style serials, and the occasional thing that grew into a real readership.
smack jeeves launched in may 2005 from chadds ford, pennsylvania. daniel liebner built it and ran it single-handedly for thirteen years. the site hosted free webcomic pages with a built-in reader, archive pages, rss feeds, comment threads, and a community forum that mattered as much as the comic-hosting did. by the time it died there were over 47000 comics on the platform, most of them dormant, a meaningful slice of them still updating.
nhn global, the us branch of the korean mobile entertainment company that also owns the asian webcomic site comico, bought smack jeeves in july 2018. the post-acquisition redesign repositioned the site around vertical-scroll comics in the line-webtoon and tapas format, closed the community forums, removed the moderation tools authors used for their own comment sections, and pushed the ad load up. user backlash started immediately and never stopped. creators began migrating to comic fury and tapas through 2019 and 2020. on november 1 2020 the company announced the wind-down, and on december 31 2020 smackjeeves.com went offline. the domain briefly redirected to pocket comics, then went dark.

~ the breakout ~
the platform's rise tracked the post-keenspace shift in webcomic hosting. keenspace had been the dominant free host until its 2005 rebrand to comic genesis and the slow decline that followed. drunk duck was the other big free option. smack jeeves arrived in may 2005 with a cleaner reader, less downtime, and a forum that grew into a real community space. it never charged hosting fees, ran on display ads, and let creators pick from a large template library for their archive pages.
~ the decline ~
the nhn redesign in 2019 broke the site in the ways that a community-driven platform cannot survive. the forums went away. creators lost the ability to moderate comments on their own comics. ad load climbed. the platform pivoted toward vertical-scroll content that the existing horizontal-page-format community had no interest in producing. the community started reading the changes as a wind-down dressed up as a relaunch, and the writeups from 2019 and 2020 are full of users saying out loud that they were leaving.
~ the day it died ~
on november 1 2020 the official announcement landed: shutdown at the end of the year. creators had two months to download their archives. on december 31 2020 the site closed for good. archive team preserved a snapshot of the public pages. the comics that had built readerships there scattered across comic fury, tapas, and tumblr. nhn's pivot to vertical-scroll comics continued without the smack jeeves name on it.
