~ the goodbye ~
i learned about yahoo india's shutdown after the fact, from a reuters headline that crossed my feed in late august 2021 about indian fdi rules and foreign digital news. i did not have a regular reason to land on in.yahoo.com from ankara. the india subdomain ran an entirely separate editorial operation from the global yahoo content layer i occasionally checked. for indian readers the portal had been a daily destination for over twenty years.
yahoo india launched 2000 as part of the broader international rollout that gave each large market a localized portal under the country subdomain. yahoo japan had landed 1996 and yahoo korea 1997 ahead of it. the india content was built out over the 2000s with yahoo news india, yahoo cricket, yahoo finance india and yahoo entertainment as the main verticals. makers india launched later under the verizon media era as a women-in-leadership content brand.
yahoo cricket was the property that mattered most. for a stretch in the mid 2000s it was one of the major destinations for live indian cricket coverage online, alongside cricinfo (before espn acquired it 2007) and the rediff cricket coverage. yahoo's distribution advantage gave the cricket portal a default audience through the yahoo mail front page and the in.yahoo.com home tile. cricbuzz launched 2004 and slowly took the mobile-first audience over the 2010s.

~ the fdi rule ~
india's department for promotion of industry and internal trade published a press note in 2020 that capped foreign direct investment in digital news media companies at 26 percent. the rule mirrored the existing print and broadcast caps. compliance required existing operators to restructure ownership down to 26 percent foreign equity within an 18-month window. yahoo (then under verizon media, mid-sale to apollo) decided the restructuring did not work for the india content business.
26 august 2021 yahoo posted the update on in.help.yahoo.com. effective that day yahoo india stopped publishing content. yahoo news india, yahoo cricket, yahoo finance india, yahoo entertainment and makers india all went read-only and then offline. the bylined indian journalists who staffed those properties were either redeployed or paid out under the closure terms.
~ what stayed ~
the help notice was specific about what remained. yahoo mail kept serving indian users without interruption and yahoo search kept running. the global yahoo properties (yahoo finance us, yahoo sports us) remained accessible from india without geo-blocks. only the india-coded content operations closed, the global side stayed alive for whoever still typed in.yahoo.com out of habit.
the fdi rule killed similar foreign-owned indian content properties in the same window. it is not a yahoo-specific death. yahoo's india content layer just happened to be one of the more visible casualties because the brand had run for twenty-one years and the cricket portal had once mattered to a generation of internet users in mumbai and bangalore. twenty-one years of localized indian portal content, closed in a single day by a regulatory cap.
