Windows Subsystem for Android

2021 - 2025
dead us
windows subsystem for android was microsoft's attempt to let a windows 11 pc run android apps, the way a mac can now run iphone apps. it shipped in 2021 leaning on amazon's appstore instead of google play, which meant a lot of the apps people actually wanted were missing. barely anyone used it, and the appstore never made enough money to pay for the team keeping it alive. microsoft pulled the plug on the 5th of march 2025, and the machines that already had it kept it, frozen, while nobody new could ever install it again.

~ the obituary ~

the thing about Windows Subsystem for Android is that it needed the Amazon Appstore, and the Amazon Appstore came with a country list that never had Turkey on it. so this is a piece of Windows i could not have run even if i had wanted to. i work at a windows-and-linux desk in Ankara, close enough to the sort of person Microsoft built this for, and it still shut me out one layer down, at the store.

the pitch was simple enough. run Android apps on a Windows 11 PC, in their own windows, next to your real programs. Microsoft shipped it to testers in the US in October 2021 and made it general on Windows 11 the February after. under the hood it ran a whole cut-down Android inside a virtual machine, with Intel's Bridge doing the translation so phone apps built for ARM could run on an ordinary Intel laptop. by then it sounded like the future.

the catch was the app store. Microsoft did not use Google Play, it used Amazon's Appstore, which is the thin one, the shelf with no Google services behind it. so a lot of what people actually open on a phone, the banking apps and half the big games, simply was not there or would not log in. more or less you got Android on your desktop and then found the cupboards mostly empty.

Born2021, shipped to windows 11 insiders in the us
Peak2022, general on windows 11 across thirty-one countries, none of them turkey
Killed5 march 2025, removed from the microsoft store
Lifespanabout three and a half years
Made bymicrosoft, built on amazon's appstore
Killed bylow usage and a store that made no money

~ why nobody used it ~

the reason it died is the same circle as the reason nobody used it. the store was thin, so few people bothered, so the store made little money, so there was never enough to justify the team that kept the whole subsystem patched and alive. a virtual machine running a fork of Android inside Windows is not a small thing to maintain. anyway, Microsoft was paying real engineers to keep a feature running that most Windows users did not know existed and the rest had opened once and closed.

~ the day it died ~

on the 5th of March 2024 Microsoft put out the notice, and it read like most of these do, a deprecation line with a date a year out. the Amazon Appstore listing came down almost right away, so from that week on you could not install it fresh even if you found the switch. the real end was the 5th of March 2025, exactly a year later, give or take nothing. whoever already had it kept it, no updates, a working ghost of a feature. everyone else just got a store page that was gone.

~ the next chapter ~

the idea did not die with the product, it just moved houses. a Mac runs iPhone apps now. Windows will happily mirror your actual phone and run its apps over a cable. the thing people wanted, a phone app open on a big screen, kept arriving by other roads. Microsoft's version lost because it leaned on the wrong store, not because the wish was wrong. by then the wish had already been granted somewhere else, quietly, without the virtual machine.
