Final Cut Studio

1999 - 2011
dead us
for twelve years final cut was the editing suite hollywood used when it was not using avid. final cut pro 7 shipped in 2009 inside the fcs3 bundle at 999 dollars with motion, color, soundtrack pro, dvd studio pro, plus compressor and shake. in june 2011 apple replaced it with final cut pro x, a complete rewrite that dropped most of the workflow editors had built their careers on. the studio was discontinued the same week.

~ the last words ~

i missed final cut studio. i have never edited video on a mac for a living and most of what i know about non-linear editing comes from watching other people complain about it on twitter. but final cut studio's 2011 death is one of the loudest software shutdowns of the decade for a specific professional audience, and the way it died is the part that still gets argued about.

final cut studio was apple's pro-video suite. the final version, fcs3, shipped in july 2009 at 999 dollars and included final cut pro 7 for editing, motion for graphics, color for grading, soundtrack pro for audio, dvd studio pro for authoring, compressor for transcoding, plus shake as a separate pro-tier license. for twelve years it was the avid alternative for documentary editors and indie filmmakers, with significant pickup in broadcast tv newsrooms. apple had bought the original code from macromedia in 1998. fcp 1.0 shipped in 1999. by the late 2000s the suite was as deep into hollywood as final cut user groups would let you imagine.

on june 21, 2011 apple launched final cut pro x and discontinued final cut studio the same week. fcpx was a complete rewrite. it could not open old final cut pro 7 projects. it dropped multicam editing, xml output, ots tape capture, and most of the keyboard-shortcut muscle memory editors had built since 1999. shake, dvd studio pro, color, soundtrack pro were not rewritten at all. they just stopped being sold.

the working professionals who had paid for the fcs3 boxes spent the next decade either nursing those licenses on older macs or migrating to premiere. apple later restored some of the missing features in fcpx incrementally, but the trust burn was permanent. by the time fcpx 10.6 had multicam back, the documentary editors had already left.

~ what got buried with it ~

shake was the bigger loss inside the loss. apple had bought shake from nothing real software in 2002 for around 50 million dollars. it was the compositing program behind lord of the rings and the matrix sequels. apple stopped developing shake in 2006, sold remaining licenses through 2009, then officially killed it in the same 2011 sweep. nuke (made by the foundry) was already taking shake's vfx-house market by then, so the death registered less than fcp7's did. but if you wanted a single object proving apple was no longer in the pro-creative software business, shake was it.

~ the long tail ~

final cut pro x kept the brand and the price point (now 299 dollars on the mac app store) but became a different product. it is still actively sold in 2026, mostly to youtubers and one-person production shops rather than the hollywood-adjacent pros it was originally for. davinci resolve picked up the rest of the colorists who had used color. premiere picked up most of the documentary editors. the people who refused to migrate are still on macs running snow leopard somewhere, opening fcs3 projects nobody else can read.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
