~ the obit ~
i missed tribe nine. gacha mobile rpg with a japanese fandom baseline was not a category i tracked, i was 41 in february 2025 doing edge ai work in ankara, not opening the japan app store to check what was trending.
what pulled tribe nine out of the general japan-mobile background noise was the staff sheet. anyway, kazutaka kodaka on the writing plus his danganronpa-era collaborators on character design and music. kodaka being the creator behind danganronpa, still the highest-recall visual novel franchise of the last fifteen years for people who followed that scene. rui komatsuzaki did the characters as she had on the danganronpa run, masafumi takada scored it. too kyo games as the studio kodaka spun up after leaving spike chunsoft in 2017.
the game was the spin-off of the tribe nine anime that liden films aired january to march 2022, twelve episodes. the setting was neo-tokyo in a dystopian future where disaffected youth were divided into tribes. the government legalized a modified violent-baseball sport called extreme baseball to redirect the tribal conflict into a sanctioned playing field. the anime had never broken out of the anime-only niche, but kodaka fans had been waiting for the game version since kodaka teased it in 2019.
launch was 20 february 2025 on ios and android with a pc client alongside. still, the game hit ten million downloads worldwide across the platforms in the first few weeks. anyway, it briefly took the top slot on the japan app store free chart and google play in japan, which is the standard measure for a mobile launch that has caught the audience. by three months in, the retention had collapsed and akatsuki was already inside the room where the shutdown decision was on the table.
~ the rap sheet ~
| Born | 20 february 2025 (too kyo games / akatsuki, ios / android / pc) |
|---|---|
| Peak | 10 million downloads worldwide, top free game on the japan ios and google play charts at launch |
| Killed | 27 november 2025 (servers off, shutdown announced 15 may 2025) |
| Lifespan | 9 months 1 week |
| Made by | too kyo games (kazutaka kodaka) and akatsuki games |
| Killed by | low revenue after the launch bump, poor player retention, no gacha stickiness |
~ what it was ~
the game was a 3d action rpg on mobile with a gacha layer for character summons, standard japan-mobile shape. combat used real-time party controls with dodges and combos and specials on a cooldown. the story mode ran chapters that unlocked characters plus scenes, and the gacha rotated new characters through banners on a monthly cadence.
kodaka wrote the main story arc across a planned four chapters. anyway, the first three chapters shipped inside the nine-month window. chapter four was announced but never came out, akatsuki cancelled it as part of the shutdown announcement. new characters ichinosuke akiba and saizo akiba had been previewed and were both cut. for what its worth, everything the roadmap had planned past may 2025 was gone.
~ the collapse ~
this part akatsuki was public about, more publicly than most gacha shutdowns get. anyway, the announcement went up 15 may 2025 on the tribe nine site and akatsuki games' social. reason given, low revenue after the launch bump, poor player retention, gacha economy not hitting the whale-supported floor that the operating cost required. six-month notice window before the 27 november kill, which is longer than most gacha shutdowns give.
kodaka posted on twitter within hours of the shutdown announcement. still, the message was that he and the two danganronpa-era collaborators shuhei yamaguchi and katsunori sugninaka were not going to let tribe nine go down in history as the project that flopped in three months. the plan was to finish the story themselves outside the game, on their own time, for free, through a doujin circle called neo neon tribe.
~ what happens next ~
this part is the thing that makes the shutdown different from a normal gacha kill. anyway, the doujin continuation is not a game, it is a japanese self-published serial that continues the tribe nine story past the point the game reached. akatsuki is supporting it non-commercially, kodaka's team is working on it non-commercially, and the fans who bought into tribe nine at launch are the target audience.
still, that continuation model is unusual for mobile gaming, most shut-down gacha titles just end and the story dies where the servers do. tribe nine is the case where the ip lived on paper past the point the operating company killed the servers, because the writers refused to let the ending get buried with the app. for what its worth, that outcome tracks the way kodaka has handled his other properties, dark writing wrapped in long-tail community loyalty and a willingness to work outside the corporate stack.
