stratos was the ann arbor bluetooth smart card founded in 2012 by thiago olson and chris bartenstein. across three funding rounds it raised about $6.63 million and launched to consumers in may 2015 at a subscription price. six months later the next round fell through and the company sold itself to a rival called ciright one on 22 december 2015. ciright failed to fulfill through 2016, and cardlab innovations picked up the remaining platform in february 2017 as a support-only handoff.

the mid-2010s smart-card cohort was a US retail story that arrived at exactly the wrong point on the payments timeline. i watched stratos from turkey the same way i watched coin and plastc: as a strange US-side experiment in solving a wallet problem that european chip-and-pin had already routed around by 2010, and that mobile-first payment stacks would fold up entirely by 2018.

thiago olson and chris bartenstein founded stratos technologies in ann arbor in 2012. across three funding rounds they raised about $6.63 million, with the most recent tranche of $5.8 million closing in october 2014. the product concept was a bluetooth-connected credit-card-sized device with a rewritable magnetic stripe. three physical buttons on the card gave one-tap access to your top three cards while additional cards lived on your phone and got pushed to the card over bluetooth on demand. one piece of plastic in the wallet, every card in the app.

the product went on sale in may 2015. six months later a follow-on funding round collapsed. on 21 december the founders confirmed to techcrunch that the company was winding down, and on 22 december they announced a sale to ciright one llc, a pennsylvania rival selling a similar product. terms undisclosed. all outstanding stratos orders and customer support responsibilities transferred to ciright the same day.

ciright was supposed to keep the stratos program alive as a going concern while shipping its own competing product (called "one") to consumers in 2016. that plan did not survive its own operational load. by early 2016 ciright was already missing shipments to stratos customers who had orders in the queue when the sale happened. later reporting from cardlab said that a group of customers never received the card they had paid for during the handoff window.

in february 2017 cardlab innovations acquired the stratos platform from ciright, framed as a technology transfer rather than a going-concern purchase. by then the consumer product was already effectively dead. cardlab's stated interest was in the bluetooth-connected-card patent stack for enterprise identity applications, not in restarting consumer sales under the stratos name.

~ what killed the category ~

the smart-card window was narrower than any of these companies calculated. apple pay landed in october 2014 and android pay followed almost exactly a year later. the US emv chip-card liability shift came on 1 october 2015, and merchant terminals rolled over to chip acceptance quickly after that, which was the specific hardware transition that made a bluetooth-controlled magnetic stripe look like a bet against the future. by mid-2017 the whole four-card cohort had folded or been absorbed. the wallet in the phone won.
