~ the eulogy ~
snap camera showed up on my desktop briefly during the 2020 lockdown window when every video call needed a small distraction to make it bearable. i was 36 in ankara, working through a laptop webcam like everyone else, and one of the coworkers on a friday-afternoon call had installed the app to run a potato filter on herself. within a week two more people had it. the app itself was a small download, unlisted anywhere in my usual install stack, and it ran as a virtual webcam that zoom and google meet just picked up without asking. i uninstalled mine after a month. it kept running on a chunk of the desktops around me until the servers went off in january 2023.
snap released the desktop client in september 2018, positioned as a way for snapchat's lens ecosystem to reach beyond the phone camera. lens studio was already an established creator tool for building ar filters and the desktop app was the surface that let those same lenses run against a webcam feed. the client installed a virtual camera device on windows and macos, then applied whichever lens the user selected and pushed the modified feed to any app that could take a webcam input. no snapchat account was required. no ads inside the client.
the market fit happened by accident in march 2020 when covid pushed the entire remote-work economy onto zoom. snap camera turned out to be the most convenient way to look like something other than yourself on a work call. the download numbers spiked during that window. twitch streamers already using obs picked it up as an ar-filter layer for their broadcast pipeline. the tool built for snapchat creators became a mass consumer webcam-mod tool for a market snap had not originally targeted.

~ the cat lawyer ~
on 9 february 2021 texas lawyer rod ponton logged into a virtual court hearing at the 394th judicial district court with snap camera's cat filter accidentally still active from a previous session on his secretary's computer. the filter overlaid a small white fluffy kitten face onto his own, complete with big blinking eyes that followed his head movements. judge roy ferguson looked at the screen and said "i believe you have a filter turned on in the video settings" while ponton fumbled through mouse clicks and said "i'm not a cat, i'm here live, i'm not a cat." the clip went up on the court's youtube channel and hit five million views inside 24 hours.
that single 40-second video became snap camera's most visible cultural moment. it was in every news broadcast that week and made ponton briefly one of the most recognizable american lawyers of the year. it also prompted a wave of "how do i turn my filter off" support requests for zoom and snap camera in parallel. by the end of february 2021 snap camera was the most widely installed webcam-mod tool in the world and the underlying lens was so widely searched that it stayed at the top of the store for months.
~ how it ended ~
the shutdown notice landed on 5 january 2023, buried inside snap's broader post-cost-cut messaging about "adjusting our web-based investments for the ar creator and developer community to focus on expanding access to camera kit for web." the concrete death date was 25 january 2023. on that day the authentication servers stopped issuing session tokens, which meant the app would launch but no lenses would load. the download page came down that week. the tool sat installed on millions of desktops as a dead shell, running its virtual webcam device but with an empty lens picker.
~ what it left ~
snap camera's real inheritance is the normalization of webcam-modification as a default consumer expectation. every video-call platform in 2026 ships some version of background blur or built-in filters natively in the client. zoom has its own filter layer now. teams runs the same category natively. the fact that filters are expected on any video call is downstream of the 2020-2022 window when snap camera showed the market what the demand actually was. camera kit for web survived as the developer surface for snap's ar lens work, targeted at partner websites rather than consumer desktops. the standalone client did not come back.
