Google One VPN

~ the goodbye ~
google one vpn was never available in turkey at the launch layer. that is the first fact of my relationship with it. i had google one for storage from around 2019 (the drive backups piled up faster than the free 15 gb could hold), but the vpn slot on the plan card was one of those "not available in your region" grays for the whole run of the product. by the time it went dark in june 2024 i had used it exactly zero times.
the service was announced on 29 october 2020, initially bundled with the $9.99/month 2tb tier and above, and initially us-only. it rolled out over the next couple of years to twenty-two countries. mostly north america, western europe, japan, mexico, taiwan. the pitch was pretty modest by consumer vpn standards. no exit country picker, no "hide your netflix region" angle. just a wireguard-style tunnel to a google-managed endpoint that the marketing page kept describing as "an extra layer for public wifi."
in early 2023 google made it a benefit for every google one tier, not just the 2tb-plus plans. that was the moment the service was closest to mainstream. the moment also closest to when the internal usage numbers must have started looking like a problem. a benefit nobody switches on stays a benefit that costs the same egress and pops the same abuse-report queues.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | 29 October 2020 in the US as a paid google one 2tb perk |
|---|---|
| Peak | 22 countries by 2023, opened to all google one tiers same year |
| Killed | 20 June 2024 (announced 11 April 2024) |
| Lifespan | about three years and eight months |
| Made by | Google LLC |
| Killed by | low subscriber usage; VPN function moved into Pixel OS and Google Fi |
~ how it actually ended ~
google announced discontinuation on 11 april 2024 with a june shutdown date. the language in the notice was flat and honest. people simply were not using the feature. by 20 june 2024 the client would not connect, the settings page redirected to a support article, the vpn line item vanished from the google one benefits list. no refunds, since the vpn had been a bundled inclusion rather than a line-priced add-on.
the pixel side had a separate story. pixel 8 phones had shipped in late 2023 with an os-level "vpn by google" toggle that lived in the network settings, not in the google one app. on 3 june 2024, two weeks before the google one product died, google backported that toggle to the pixel 7 series and pixel fold. so the vpn tech was not being killed. it was being reshelved as a phone-hardware perk rather than a subscription line-item.
~ what got buried with it ~
google one lost one of the two headline benefits that made the paid tiers feel like something more than a storage bill. the other headline was expanded photo editing in google photos. after the vpn cut, the paid tiers became mostly storage plus some ai features that came and went with the rest of the gemini rebrand. the exact tier changes, they shift every quarter.
for the actual privacy-vpn user (someone bypassing a workplace filter or a country block) google one vpn had never been the right tool anyway, since it did not let you pick an exit country. the real vpn market in turkey was and still is the express/nord/proton crowd, driven by the years of twitter and wikipedia and other site blocks. google one vpn sat next to those markets rather than inside them.
~ the long tail ~
this is a killed-by-google entry with almost no cultural residue. no fan sites, no reddit lament threads of any size. a subscription-side feature quietly folded into hardware, and the announcement barely trended for a day. google fi kept its own vpn; pixel kept the os-level one. the google one brand kept the storage line and folded the rest into the gemini rebrand over the following year. everything else in that product square just became a "was discontinued in june 2024" line on a wikipedia edit.
