~ the goodbye ~
the rio karma had a small audiophile cult in 2003 that did not include me (close enough). i remember the rio name from the diamond multimedia pmp300, the 32mb flash player from 1998 that survived the riaa lawsuit and basically opened the legal door for the ipod. by 2003 i was twenty and writing c on a ttnet adsl line, and any music i carried was on a cd-r in a discman pocket. a $400 hard drive player with parametric eq and an ethernet dock was not a thing i was going to spend two weeks of student money on, in those days.
rio shipped the karma in august 2003 as a 20gb hard-drive jukebox. the player had a working 5-band parametric eq plus a cross-fader you could actually use. it played ogg vorbis and flac in firmware, which on a 2003 jukebox felt like a real statement. and it did the one thing nobody else in the ipod generation managed: proper gapless playback. the dock had an ethernet port for syncing music across a home network, the first hard-drive player to bother with one. the audiophile press at hydrogenaudio adopted it immediately.
the problem was timing, anyway. the ipod 3rd generation had shipped in april 2003 and was already eating the hard-drive jukebox category at retail. by mid-2004 the ipod owned 70% of the us mp3 player market on brand alone, and the karma's compatible-with-everything pitch was a minority appeal next to apple's marketing. rio kept shipping through 2004 as a shrinking division of sonicblue, then as a shrinking brand of d&m holdings after the japanese audio conglomerate bought the audio assets out of the sonicblue bankruptcy. d&m shut the rio brand in august 2005 and the karma stopped being made.
the death was a corporate shutdown of the parent rather than a product failure. the karma had real sales for an audiophile niche product. it won most of the head-to-head reviews against the ipod on audio quality. it is still cited in 2026 as the hd jukebox the format people wish ipod had been. that did not save it. apple owned the category by 2005 and rio could not pivot fast enough to flash.

~ what made it loved ~
hydrogenaudio is the forum where audio compression nerds compared encoder builds in 2003, and the karma was one of the players the regulars would actually buy. it decoded lame mp3 builds without complaint, handled vorbis aotuv at high quality, and would play flac as well. the gapless playback was the trick the ipod did not learn until 2007. the parametric eq let users compensate for the headphone curve they actually owned rather than picking from a preset list, and the ethernet sync meant the dock could sit on a shelf next to the stereo and never plug into a laptop again. for a small slice of buyers in 2003 the karma was the only hd jukebox that respected how they used music. that slice never grew large enough to matter to apple.
~ what really happened ~
sonicblue, the parent that owned rio in 2003, went bankrupt in march 2003 right before the karma launched. d&m holdings, the japanese audio conglomerate behind denon and marantz, bought the rio audio assets out of the bankruptcy that summer. the karma shipped under d&m. by august 2005 d&m had decided it could not run a portable audio brand against apple at retail and shut rio entirely. the firmware team disbanded, and warranty support transferred to a third party for one more year. the karma joined the small set of products that ended because the holding company gave up on the category around them.
~ the long tail ~
this part you had to be on the hydrogenaudio forum for, anyway. a small modding community kept karma firmware patches alive into the early 2010s, mostly to fix the failing hard drives by swapping in compactflash adapters. by 2026 the karma is a vintage object on ebay rather than a working device, and most of the units still in service have had their batteries and drives replaced at least once. the substack iterate piece by chris jennings in 2022 is the eulogy most karma owners point to when they want to explain why the player still matters. apple shipped gapless playback in ios 1.2.2 in december 2007, four years late, and never acknowledged the karma did it first.
