~ the obituary ~
Spanish sports journalism is an argument between two newspapers that started before I was born, Marca in 1938 and As in 1967, and from outside the country you mostly meet it as transfer rumors that turn out to be nothing. Turkish sports press works on a similar engine, so I recognize the shape without having read a word of the Spanish version. Relevo was the attempt to build something else out of the same people.
Vocento, which also owns ABC, assembled the newsroom in the spring of 2022, roughly seventy journalists and most of them poached from Marca and As. It spent five months publishing on social platforms only, with no website at all, which is a strange and rather clear-eyed way to launch a newspaper in 2022. The site opened on 6 October that year. By then it already had half a million followers.
The editorial line was specific. Sport and nothing else, no celebrity gossip, no clickbait, written for people under forty and made for a phone first. It covered women's football at a volume the established papers had never bothered with, and about thirty percent of the newsroom was women, which in Spanish sports media was itself a statement.

~ the scoop ~
In August 2023 the Spanish federation president kissed Jenni Hermoso on the podium after the World Cup final, and then his people put out a statement in her name saying she had been fine with it. Relevo reported that she had never said any of it, and that she had refused to appear in the apology video his side wanted to film.
That single piece of reporting moved the story from a dispute about a moment to a documented attempt to manufacture consent after the fact, and it is a straight line from there to Luis Rubiales losing his job. The site did more than 13 million page views that month against 8.4 million in July, and crossed a million followers. A newsroom twelve months old had produced the biggest sports story in the country.
~ the arithmetic ~
None of it paid. By early 2025 Relevo was carrying an accumulated negative EBITDA of around 1.1 million euros, and in February Vocento gave it a short extension to reach profitability. The reporter who broke the Rubiales story had already left by the end of that month, which is usually the sign that everybody inside a building knows how the year ends.
The severance agreements were signed in the middle of May under a new chief executive, and the site went dark on 29 May 2025. Audience was never the failure. Seventy salaries against Spanish digital display rates was the failure, and it would have been the failure with or without the scoop, which is the part worth sitting with. Being right and being read at scale bought this newsroom twenty-one extra months and not one euro of structural safety.
