Poupéegirl

2007 - 2015
dead asia
poupéegirl was a japanese fashion community where you photographed real clothes you owned, uploaded them, and earned currency to dress up a little cartoon doll. it launched in 2007 out of cyberagent, drew over half a million users, and ran brand tie-ins with names like louis vuitton and shiseido. it started switching features off in 2013 and closed completely on the last day of march 2015.

~ the last words ~

this one sits about as far from me as an internet thing can get. poupéegirl was japanese, it was about fashion, and it was mostly young women dressing up a little cartoon doll. i was a turkish engineer who did not think much about clothes and could not read a word of the language. so i am reconstructing it entirely from the outside, which feels only fair to say up front.

it launched on the twenty-eighth of february 2007, made by cyberagent, the tokyo company behind the big ameba network. the loop at the center of it was genuinely clever. you photographed a real piece of clothing you actually owned, uploaded it, and in exchange you earned the site currency, called ribbons, which you then spent on virtual items for your doll. your real wardrobe funded your fake one. that little trick turned an ordinary dress-up game into something closer to a diary of what people wore.

it grew fast. over 560,000 users by 2009, at which point it moved onto the ameba platform proper. it ran collaborations with real brands like louis vuitton and shiseido, letting members buy avatar items based on things you could hold in your hands. the name is a small joke, poupée being french for doll, pinned onto the english word girl.

~ how it worked ~

the genius, if that is not too strong a word for a doll dress-up site, was that it made people document their own clothes to get anywhere. the economy ran on real outfits, so the community turned into a running feed of what everyone was wearing and how they styled it. you admired what other people wore and chased a better closet of your own. it was social media about fashion years before instagram made that the default, running quietly in japanese on a network most of the west never touched.

~ what it got right ~

tying the virtual economy to real photos was the sharp idea. it meant the game rewarded you for paying attention to your actual life, and it gave the whole thing a texture that a pure avatar economy never has. a lot of later apps stumbled toward the same feeling, the mix of a personal wardrobe and a public feed, without quite naming what poupéegirl had already done. it was small and specific and it knew exactly what it was.

~ how it actually ended ~

the wind-down came in stages. in july 2013 cyberagent announced it would switch features off starting that august, closing registration to new users and switching off the paid jewels. the site kept breathing for another year and a half in that reduced state. then on the twenty-seventh of february 2015 came the final notice, and on the thirty-first of march it closed for good. a very particular little world, and when it went, it went quietly, the way most of these do.
