~ the obituary ~
i knew ameba pigg by category, an avatar-plus-room japanese social space with a big user base and a strong in-game economy, but never touched it. the english-language spinoff, ameba pico, passed me by entirely. by 2010 i was 26 and working as an engineer. the target demographic for facebook virtual worlds was several years younger and mostly american. i learned about pico's existence years after it shut down.
cyberagent opened its US subsidiary on 11 march 2010 with pico as the launch product. it was a facebook-embedded port of the japanese ameba pigg client. same cartoon-avatar rooms with dress-up items on top of the isometric look that had built pigg into a big japanese property. the site was available in english alongside four other languages including chinese and spanish. pico crossed one million registered users inside 90 days and drew about 1.7 million monthly active users on facebook by mid-2011.
the death arc lines up with the wider collapse of the facebook-games era. zynga's cityville peaked at 100 million MAU in january 2011 and fell off a cliff through 2012 as facebook changed the notification and viral-share mechanics that had powered the whole category. pico was a smaller property in the same market, and the same headwinds hit it harder.

~ how it landed on facebook ~
pigg had launched on ameba.jp in 2009 as a browser flash client. porting to facebook meant a rewrite plus localization work for five languages, with facebook credits integration bolted on top and later removed. the US subsidiary was the operating entity. cyberagent picked pico as the flagship for the us market rather than launching pigg proper because the branding was already tied to japanese celebrity partnerships and the japanese ameba blog network that had no english audience.
~ what killed it ~
cyberagent announced the shutdown in october 2012 with a 17 december 2012 hard-close date. account data and every item balance were wiped at close with no export path. the shutdown notice cited a broad review of overseas operations. pigg on ameba.jp kept running. pigg party, a later mobile spinoff, continued in japan until 2019. the english subsidiary itself wound down and cyberagent pulled back to a domestic focus by 2013.
~ what carried over ~
the isometric cartoon-avatar chat room as a format did not survive facebook's platform shift. habbo hotel stayed running in various regions, but the specific pigg-family aesthetic, thick outline and pastel palette, sits mostly in japanese history now. cyberagent kept ameba as a blog network and pivoted the games business toward mobile with cygames and a set of anime-adjacent gacha titles. pico is one of a set of facebook-games-era virtual worlds that closed inside a three-year window.
