~ the eulogy ~
The conceit was that the girls were the weapons. Every character in Phantom of the Kill carried the name of a legendary blade or spear out of myth, Tyrfing and Masamune among them, personified as a cast of young women you moved around a grid. Underneath that it was an orthodox tactics game built on terrain and weapon matchups, with a gacha attached to the front door. Fuji&gumi Games put the Android build on Google Play on 23 October 2014 and the iOS build followed about a month after.
It did well enough for long enough that the shape of its life is hard to read as failure. Twenty-nine voice actors were cast at launch, Production I.G made a short animated film out of the setting in 2016, and a PC version arrived on DMM GAMES the following May. By 2022 the download counter had passed six million.
Then, at the ninth anniversary in October 2023, a producer letter said that new units and new story were finished, while insisting the service itself would continue. That is the moment the game actually stopped being a live product, even though it kept answering for another seven months.

~ april the first ~
The closing notice went up on 1 April 2024, which is a date no company picks on purpose for news it wants believed. Sales of the paid currency, himeishi, ended that same afternoon at 3pm. The service ended on 27 May at 3pm exactly, and the notice is blunt about what happens next: the app simply becomes unplayable, with no memorial build behind it. Refund applications for unspent paid currency opened at 3pm on 28 May, a day after the thing they related to had ceased to exist.
~ twenty-nine voices and one supervisor ~
The credit that follows this game around is Mamoru Oshii, and it grows in the retelling. The Japanese Wikipedia article calls him 監督, director. What the contemporary trade press actually printed when the official site opened in 2014 is 監修, supervision, and specifically supervision of the opening movie rather than the game. Gamer.ne.jp repeated that wording on launch day, listing it beside the twenty-nine-strong voice cast as a selling point.
That distinction is worth keeping because the smaller claim is the more interesting one. A mobile gacha in 2014 found the budget to have a famous film director oversee a minute or so of animation that most players would skip after the second launch, and then put the arrangement in its own press materials before the game was even out.
~ the heir, and the heir's heir ~
A successor was already live before the original died. Phantom of the Kill: Alternative Imitation opened on 5 March 2024, eighty-three days before its parent closed, and when the closing notice went up it promised login-based compensation inside that game and level-based compensation inside another gumi title. Both sets of compensation were itemized in the same notice that named the death date.
The heir did not last either. Alternative Imitation was a blockchain game, with the characters you raised convertible into tokens, and gC Games announced on 28 May 2026 that it would close on 30 July at 3pm, just short of two years and five months old. Two games now carry the name and are still running: a spin-off called Three Stars that Studio Z launched on 21 April 2026, and Phantom of Sweet Carnival, which gumi opened in August 2024. The brand outlived every individual service built under it.
~ the part that stayed in japan ~
The last thing the operators did with the official account was rename it. It stopped being the account of a running game and became, in the Japanese, the account of a game that says thank you very much, a formality that does not survive translation and was never meant to. That was in keeping with the rest of it: one country and one language, for the whole nine years and seven months. Under the new name it posted the farewell on 1 April 2024, thanking players for about nine and a half years and naming the May afternoon when it would stop.
