Origin Systems

1983 - 2004

origin systems was founded on march 4 1983 by richard garriott (lord british) with his brother robert and father owen. across two decades it shipped the ultima series, the wing commander series, and ultima online in 1997, which set the template for the entire western mmo genre. ea bought the studio in september 1992 for around thirty-five million in stock. after ultima ix shipped to mixed reviews in 1999, ea cancelled the future ultima projects and ran the studio down. it was dissolved on february 12 2004.

~ the goodbye ~

ultima online was the rpg i actually lived in. not the ea-published official server (which was expensive and not reachable from turkey for a teenager) but the private shards that emulated it: overdone, nebula, sylveria online. those servers were running a reverse-engineered version of the code origin systems had shipped in 1997, with custom rule sets layered on top. the original studio that wrote the engine being emulated was origin. nobody on the turkish shards talked about origin systems by name. the company had been dead for years by the time i was on sylveria.

origin systems was founded on march 4 1983 in houston, texas by richard garriott, his brother robert, and their father owen (the astronaut). richard was twenty-two and had already shipped akalabeth and the first three ultima titles under the lord british persona. the company moved to austin in 1986. through the late eighties and early nineties it ran two flagship series in parallel: ultima on the rpg side, wing commander on the space-combat-sim side. chris roberts built wing commander inside origin starting in 1990.

ea acquired origin in september 1992 for around thirty-five million dollars in stock. ultima vii: the black gate shipped that same year on a custom voxel-meets-tile engine. wing commander iii (1994) and iv (1996) were the full-motion-video era flagships, with mark hamill and malcolm mcdowell on the cast. ultima online in september 1997 became the first commercially successful graphical mmo, peaked at around 250,000 subscribers, and effectively created the template that everquest and world of warcraft inherited.

i was not paying attention to the corporate side. ultima ix: ascension in november 1999 was the catastrophic release. it was buggy on launch, the engine performed badly even on high-end hardware, and the story was widely seen as botched. ea cancelled ultima online 2, cancelled the in-development ultima x odyssey, cancelled the harry potter mmo project, and gradually drew down headcount across the next four years. the studio was officially dissolved on february 12 2004 with the remaining team folded into ea's online services group. richard garriott had already left in 2000.

~ the breakout ~

the ultima signature was the open-world rpg with actual ethical content. richard garriott built the virtues system into ultima iv in 1985, which made the player's behavior in the world (not just combat ability) the measure of progress. every npc could be conversed with, every chest could be looted, every guard would react if you stole. it was the first western rpg that asked the player to be a specific kind of person rather than just a generic adventurer.

ultima online in september 1997 took the same world simulation and put it on a persistent server. early uo had a fully simulated ecology, predator and prey species that balanced each other in the wilderness. the player population promptly ate every animal on the map, the ecology collapsed, and the team cut the simulation in a patch. it was the first lesson in mmo design that nobody designs for, which is that players will route around any system you build.

~ the postmortem ~

ultima ix was the problem but not the cause. ea had been quietly squeezing origin since the mid-nineties, requesting more sequels on shorter cycles, redirecting headcount toward the online subscription business that uo had proven out. richard garriott left in march 2000 over those creative-direction disagreements and founded destination games with several origin veterans, which ncsoft acquired in 2001 and which became the studio that built tabula rasa.

the remaining origin team in austin maintained ultima online subscriptions for ea while shipping nothing new. wing commander as a franchise had been wound down after the 1999 movie underperformed. the february 2004 closure was the last act of a multi-year dissolution. the austin office was repurposed as an ea customer-service center for ultima online for a few more years before that too was outsourced.

~ the long tail ~

ultima online is still operational in 2026 under broadsword online games, which licenses the codebase from ea. it has been running continuously for twenty-nine years. richard garriott shipped tabula rasa in 2007 (closed 2009), then crowdfunded shroud of the avatar as a spiritual successor to ultima, which shipped in 2018 and is still in maintenance mode under portalarium. chris roberts kickstarted star citizen in 2012 with origin in the studio dna and is still building it. the wing commander brand sits in ea's vault and has not had a new entry since 1999.

the private-server scene that the turkish shards i played on came out of is also still alive. runuo and servuo are the two open-source emulator codebases. shards in europe and the us still launch periodically. the company that made the original is gone but the world it built has not stopped running.
