Oculus Go

the cheap door into standalone vr, and the one that got left behind fastest. the go needed no pc and no phone, just the headset and $199, and for a moment it was how you got someone their first taste of virtual reality. then the quest could do everything it did plus walk around, and facebook stopped making it after two years.

~ the goodbye ~

i work near this one. computer vision is my day job, and a standalone headset is a camera-and-sensor problem i can respect from the inside, the kind of tight embedded build where the whole trick is doing real work on a small power budget. i still never owned a consumer headset. the Oculus Go sat just outside my life, close enough that i understood exactly what it was doing and far enough that i never actually strapped one on.

it came out on 1 May 2018 as the entry-level way into virtual reality. no PC to tether to, no phone to slot into a plastic frame, just the headset and $199. it was built by Facebook's Oculus arm together with Qualcomm on the chip side and Xiaomi on manufacturing, and in China Xiaomi sold its own version of the same hardware. for a lot of people the Go was the first VR they ever wore, the thing a friend handed you at a kitchen table.

the catch was baked into the design. the Go tracked the rotation of your head but not your movement through space, so you sat still and looked around a scene rather than walking through it. that was fine for a video or a simple app, and it kept the price low, but it put a ceiling on the whole device from day one.

~ how it landed ~

as a cheap first taste it worked. the Go was comfortable enough, simple to hand to someone who had never tried VR, and it made the idea real for people who were never going to buy a gaming PC and a roomful of sensors. it sold on being easy and affordable rather than powerful, and for a year or so that was a real slice of the market that nothing else served as well.

~ what it became ~

then the Oculus Quest arrived in 2019 and did everything the Go did, plus it tracked your position, so you could stand up and move. once one device covered the whole range from seated video to room-scale games, keeping a seated-only sibling around made no sense. Facebook discontinued the Go on 23 June 2020 to concentrate on the Quest line. it kept patching the software with security fixes into 2022, but the store stopped taking new apps that December. the Go had done its job as the on-ramp, and the moment the better road opened it was pulled off the map.
