Newton Mail

2013 - 2024
dead
the paid consumer email app for people who wanted read receipts and snooze functions on every platform they touched. cloudmagic launched the original in 2013 and renamed it newton on 15 september 2016. the first shutdown came in september 2018. essential products bought it, ran it a year, then folded in 2020. simform and sofriendly picked up the wreckage and ran it four more years before announcing the final closure on 24 july 2024.

~ the obituary ~

premium consumer email apps for mac and ios were the kind of product i watched from an android phone and a windows laptop in ankara. that was not my demographic. newton mail lived in the same category as [[sparrow]] and [[mailbox]]: paid inbox utilities aimed at the professional-class us mac user who wanted a nicer email surface than what apple mail shipped. i was on gmail-in-a-browser like most of turkey and did not have a $50-a-year hole in my head for a mail client.

the shape of it though is worth writing down because it kept dying and coming back. rohit nadhani started cloudmagic in india in 2013 as an email-search and unified-inbox app. the search engine part of it was actually good, it indexed gmail and outlook accounts fast and let you search across them without opening the web ui. on 15 september 2016 the team renamed the whole thing to newton mail and moved to a subscription model at $49.99 a year, betting that the same people who paid for evernote and 1password would pay for email.

the bet was wrong the first time. on 7 august 2018 nadhani announced newton would shut down on 25 september, citing that the premium consumer email market was too small and that the free apps from apple and google and microsoft had gotten close enough. subscribers got partial refunds. the servers went dark at the end of september.

~ how it landed ~

what newton actually did was collect the useful features from a dozen other apps into one paid subscription. read receipts (you could see when the recipient opened your mail). snooze (push a message out of the inbox until tomorrow). send later. undo send. integrations with evernote and trello and todoist and asana that let you push a message directly to a task list. across five platforms. that last part was the actual selling point. sparrow was ios and mac. mailbox was ios and android. newton ran on ios and android and macos and windows and chromebooks, and it kept the ui consistent enough that you did not have to relearn anything when you switched machines.

the review press liked it. techradar and the verge and thurrott all wrote positive reviews at the 2016 relaunch. the numbers just never got big enough to sustain a team building for five platforms simultaneously on subscription income alone. the user count was in the tens of thousands, not the millions.

~ the two shutdowns and the third one ~

essential products, andy rubin's post-google phone startup, bought newton on 5 february 2019 for an undisclosed price. the deal was strange even at the time because essential was a hardware company (the essential phone had launched in 2017 to weak sales) and had no real reason to run an email service. rubin's stated theory was that essential wanted to build ai-driven consumer software around messaging and mail. newton came back online for existing subscribers, kept its team, and ran for about a year.

on 12 february 2020 essential announced it was folding entirely. hardware, software, mail app, all of it. newton would run until 30 april 2020 and then be gone. subscribers got the same partial-refund treatment as the first time.

then in may 2020 two firms nobody had heard of, simform and sofriendly, acquired the code and brought it back a third time. they ran it as a quiet subscription business for four more years, mostly holding the existing user base without adding much. on 24 july 2024 the final shutdown got announced with a 31 july end-of-service date. that was the third and last one.

~ what carried over ~

newton is one of the few pieces of consumer software you can point at and say "it died three times over eleven years and each death was for a different reason." the first was market size. the second was a hardware company failing. the third was two boutiques deciding they were done. [[mailbox]] and [[sparrow]] and [[inbox-by-gmail]] all died once and cleanly. newton took the longer route. the read receipts and snooze features it fought to put behind a paywall are all free in gmail and outlook now, added quietly over the years, exactly the trajectory nadhani predicted in his 2018 shutdown post.
