french indie team builds the prettiest gmail client on the mac, becomes the top paid app on the mac app store its first day, ships an iphone version a year later. google buys the team in july 2012 and stops development the same week. one final bug-fix release ships in october, then nothing. the founders move to inbox by gmail, which dies in 2019.

~ the obit ~

sparrow was a paid mac email client made by a small french team in paris. it reached the top of the mac app store on its first day in february 2011 and stayed near the top for months, which was unusual for a ten-dollar app whose entire pitch was that gmail looked better in this window than in your browser. in march 2012 the team shipped an iphone version. four months later google bought them.

the deal was an acquihire. google wanted dominique leca and the engineers, not the product. the same day the deal closed sparrow's blog announced that the app would get critical bug fixes and nothing else. one more release shipped in october 2012 as version 1.6.4, then the app sat on the store untouched while macs and iphones kept changing under it.

i was on linux and windows in 2012, paying for as little software as possible. sparrow was for a different crowd: mac people who used gmail and could not stand the gmail web ui. that was a real and devoted population. when the team folded into google to build a "better gmail" the irony was already obvious. they ended up working on inbox by gmail, which itself got killed in 2019.

~ the rise ~

sparrow benefited from a specific moment. the mac app store had launched in january 2011, two weeks before sparrow appeared. apple had just trained mac users to expect a one-click install from a curated store with payments handled. sparrow walked into that window with a clean icon and a single demo screen. the price was low enough to feel like a deal but high enough to feel like a real product, not a freemium funnel.

the design was the thing people remembered. it was a single-column inbox that looked like a chat client, with conversations threaded inline and gmail labels treated as tags. it felt like someone had finally accepted that gmail's underlying ideas were good and the gmail web ui was not. for the small audience that used gmail all day on a mac, it became the default email app for about a year.

~ the day it died ~

20 july 2012. google posted a short note saying sparrow had been acquired and would join the gmail team. the founders posted their own note saying users would still get bug fixes but no major new features. the language was the standard acquihire script. nothing about it was surprising in 2012; google had been buying small product teams and shutting their products down for years. the surprise was how fast the app stopped being usable.

ios kept moving. ios 7 introduced a complete redesign in 2013 and push notifications evolved at the protocol level, but sparrow had no team left to keep up. by 2014 the iphone version looked like an artifact from a previous os era. the mac version kept opening but struggled with new gmail authentication flows. the app sat on the store the whole time, never pulled, never updated. people who had paid for it kept downloading it for years out of nostalgia.

~ what it became ~

nothing. the sparrow team folded into google and worked on inbox by gmail, an experimental email product that launched in 2014 and got killed in 2019 (rip.so/inbox-by-gmail). after that the trail goes cold. there is no sparrow successor. no clone of sparrow ever quite captured the same audience because the audience was paying for a moment in mac software, not a feature set.

the closest thing to sparrow's public reception came a year later with mailbox (rip.so/mailbox), another small team with a beautiful email app that got bought and shut down. the pattern was loud enough by 2013 that "indie email app gets acquired then shelved" became a recognizable career move. people who liked sparrow learned to be suspicious of any app that looked too good and depended on a gmail api.
