Nettby

2006 - 2010
dead europe
nettby was the norwegian social network that schibsted's vg multimedia opened september 14 2006 as a community layer next to the vg.no tabloid. members used pseudonyms not real names, profiles were sorted by city. peak membership crossed 980,000 in january 2009 making it norway's second-largest online community after facebook. trondheim was the most active hub with 36,000 members. vg pulled the plug december 19 2010 when facebook had taken over the same audience.

~ the obituary ~

nettby sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. norwegian-language regional social network out of oslo, run as a community spinoff from a tabloid newspaper website. the user base was norwegian, the interface was norwegian, the conversations about which trondheim hangout to meet at on saturday were norwegian. there was no surface where that life would have reached a comp eng student on ttnet adsl in ankara.

the site launched 14 september 2006 out of vg multimedia, the digital arm of verdens gang, the tabloid daily that schibsted media group had been operating since the 1940s. the structural pitch was the same as friendster and hi5 the year before, with one nordic-press twist: nettby was bolted into the vg.no main site as the social layer next to the news. you read the headlines, you opened a nettby profile, you logged your friends from gymnas onto the same platform.

the design choice that gave nettby its character was the pseudonym default. members did not have to register with real names, profiles were instead organized by city. the most active hub was trondheim with around 36,000 members at peak, oslo and bergen behind. it was closer to a regional forum than to the friend-graph model facebook would popularize, and the pseudonym layer made it more of a chat playground than an identity surface.

~ what it was ~

peak registered profiles crossed 980,000 in january 2009. norway's population was around 4.8 million at that point, the platform's reach was substantial in absolute terms inside the country. that put nettby second only to facebook among norwegian online communities. for a single-country site built off a newspaper backend the numbers were closer to lunarstorm in sweden or iwiw in hungary than to anything anglo-american.

the conversation forums broke down by city and by topic, the front page was a feed of recently-active threads. the visual style was the same blue and white tabloid template vg.no used for news, the community was visibly a vg property. that newspaper integration was the structural advantage during the rise, free promotion at the top of every vg article page, and it also locked the site's fate to the vg.no editorial calendar.

~ the slide ~

facebook crossed into the norwegian mainstream from late 2008. the norwegian-language facebook interface launched september 2008, mainstream press coverage followed through 2009. by mid 2010 the typical norwegian teenager who had used nettby for two years was on facebook for the friend graph and on nettby out of habit. the pseudonym default that had given nettby its rhythm became a structural disadvantage against facebook's real-name policy and friend recommendation engine.

vg multimedia made the call in autumn 2010. the platform was running unprofitably against the facebook trend line, the content moderation cost on a pseudonymous network with 980k profiles was high, the strategic value of running a separate community next to vg.no had collapsed. the announcement gave members three months to download their posts and photos. the final shutdown landed 19 december 2010 with the database removed from vg infrastructure.

~ what replaced it ~

schibsted kept its identity-bet money on the classified verticals, finn.no for norway and blocket for sweden. those properties survived the social-network collapse intact because they were not competing with facebook for friend-graph attention. nettby itself left no successor, the user base migrated to facebook directly, the pseudonymous regional-norwegian online community shape did not get rebuilt anywhere afterward.
