Triller

2015 - 2025
dead us
triller was the loudest of the tiktok rivals during the 2020 india ban and the trump-era tiktok-divestiture noise. ryan kavanaugh wrapped it in a boxing-event marketing budget, claimed user numbers that nobody verified, burned through SPACs and IPO attempts, then got delisted from nasdaq on 30 december 2025 for missing four periodic filings. the app survives in whatever form it survives. the public-company death is the real death.

~ the obituary ~

triller shipped in july 2015 as a music-video editor that used ai to sync amateur clips to a backing track. you would record yourself lip-syncing or dancing in short takes, the app would cut the timeline against the beat for you, and the result looked smoother than what musical.ly was doing with the same input. for about four years it was a small la-based product that hip-hop artists occasionally promoted. then in june 2020 india banned tiktok over national-security grievances with china, and overnight triller's india install count went from under a million to thirty-plus million. ryan kavanaugh's proxima media had taken a majority stake in 2019 and turned the marketing budget up.

october 2020 brought a press release claiming 100 million monthly active users. apptopia, the third-party analytics firm, looked at the same period and counted about 52 million lifetime installs. the gap between the two numbers became the brand. triller bought the verzuz battle series from swizz beatz and timbaland, signed a boxing-event deal that brought in mike tyson's november 2020 exhibition match, and announced an IPO that never quite happened. by 2022 the SPAC merger talks had collapsed. by 2024 the first actual public listing went through on nasdaq under triller group inc. by december 2025 the company had not filed an annual report for fiscal 2024, had not filed quarterly reports for the first three quarters of 2025, and the nasdaq hearings panel was running out of patience.

the teen-coded short-video crowd that picked tiktok over triller in 2020 was not my crowd. i was thirty-six in 2020, computer-vision engineer in ankara, watched the tiktok-india-ban story as a press-release sequence rather than a thing that affected my feed. tiktok itself was already a thing turkish teens used by then, and triller was an alternative i read about in tech news rather than installed. the people i knew who tried triller tried it for one weekend during a kavanaugh-promoted boxing event and never opened it again.

~ the climb ~

the 2020 window was the only window triller ever had. tiktok was banned in india in late june. the trump administration started talking about banning it in the us in august. for about ninety days every american tech reporter was looking for the credible alternative and triller was the loudest candidate in that search. kavanaugh moved fast: secured the verzuz acquisition, paid the licensing for a major-label music catalog, paid mike tyson to come out of retirement and fight roy jones jr. on a triller-branded pay-per-view in november 2020. the boxing event did real numbers and the brand association with combat sports stuck for the next two years.

the founders, david leiberman and sammy rubin, had largely been pushed out of the operational picture by then. mahi de silva came in as ceo in april 2021. the strategy was to grow by stapling celebrity moments to the app rather than by building the product itself. that worked when there was a tiktok-vacuum to fill. once the trump ban talk faded and tiktok stayed legal in the us, the vacuum closed.

~ the slide ~

the inflated user-number reporting started catching up first. trade-press stories ran the apptopia counter-numbers next to triller's own claims. the music-rights side of the business collapsed in 2022 when ttv music walked away over unpaid licensing fees, and the major labels followed. revenue dropped 57 percent year-over-year by 2024. the SPAC merger that had been announced and re-announced never closed at terms anyone wanted. when the actual nasdaq listing came through under the triller group inc shell in october 2024, the stock spent most of its first year trading sub-dollar.

the accounting story for fiscal 2024 was supposed to clear in early 2025. it did not. the company kept telling nasdaq that the delay was a technical matter around consolidating accounts for a system upgrade. nasdaq granted extensions. the extensions ran out. by december 2025 the company had missed four separate filing deadlines and the hearings panel set a final cutoff of 24 december. that deadline also passed.

~ the day it died ~

the determination letter from the nasdaq hearings panel was dated 26 december 2025. trading was suspended at the market open on 30 december. triller group announced that it would appeal the decision and had hired counsel for that purpose, and that operational activity at the underlying triller app would continue normally. those two sentences are the standard public-company-delisting press release and they almost always end the same way.

the cultural-loss event is the delisting itself. triller's whole adult life was as a public-market story: SPAC chatter, IPO chatter, boxing-event promotion, inflated user metrics for the next investor deck. once the public-market vehicle is gone, the brand has no remaining mechanism to be culturally loud. the app may keep running for a while in some form. nobody will be checking on it.
