Tuenti

2006 - 2016
dead europe
tuenti was spain's facebook between 2009 and 2012, with fifteen million registered users at peak and an estimated fifteen percent of all spanish web traffic running through its pages. telefónica bought 85 percent of the company in 2010 and finished the buyout in 2013. in early 2016 the social features got stripped out of the app and the website, leaving only the chat module inside the tuenti móvil carrier brand. the spanish phone service itself ran until june 2022.

tuenti opened in february 2006 as a closed network for spanish university students. you could only join with an invite, and the early invites came from madrid campus circles. by 2008 it had spread into spanish high schools and turned into the country's default social platform, the way facebook did everywhere else. it was sometimes called the spanish facebook, but the timing inside spain was reversed. tuenti got there first.

at peak in 2011 it claimed over fifteen million registered users. an estimate that year said roughly fifteen percent of all web traffic inside spain ran through tuenti pages. telefónica had already bought 85 percent of the company in 2010 for around 70 million euros, and finished the buyout in 2013. the social features started getting stripped in early 2016. by march of that year the chat was the only thing left, and the rest of the site had been quietly converted into a mobile carrier brand.

tuenti never reached turkey. spain has its own social-network history that runs parallel to the rest of europe. it stayed locally dominant for a window, then a telco bought it and turned it into something else entirely. i can read about that arc but i cannot remember it. the closest equivalent in the turkish window was hi5 around 2007, and facebook took over from late 2008.

~ how it landed ~

tuenti was started in 2006 by five co-founders inside the spanish university scene. the name is a contraction of "tu entidad" (your entity), and the early site looked like an early facebook with red branding instead of blue. you needed an invite to register, and the invites came from existing users. that closed-loop structure is also why other countries never picked it up. there was no public signup form for outsiders.

~ the rise ~

by 2009 it had pushed past myspace and tagged inside spain. the school-age demographic was where tuenti was strongest. parents complained about it for the same reasons parents complained about every social network in 2009, and the spanish data protection agency fined it twice for handling minors' photos. telefónica's 2010 acquisition was framed as a strategic bet on the youth phone market rather than on the social network. that framing turned out to be honest, since the social network was not what telefónica kept.

~ how it actually ended ~

the 2016 wind-down was not announced as a shutdown. telefónica pushed an update for the mobile app and the website that removed nearly every social feature. only the chat module survived, kept as a feature inside the tuenti móvil mvno app. the spanish phone service itself ran until june 2022. the social network had been finished for six years by then, but technically tuenti was not a dead brand until 2022. it died in two stages, and the second stage almost no one noticed.
