~ the goodbye ~
i was not everyone for any of this. nateon lived on the other side of a language wall i never crossed. in the 2003 to 2010 window when it went from beta to the biggest instant messenger in south korea, i was on msn in ankara like every other turk on ttnet. the two products worked the same way, contact list on the left with chat windows floating separately. korean users just clicked a different logo.
sk communications built nateon as a bolt-on to nate, the sk telecom portal that got its shape from the 2003 lycos-korea merger. the beta launched in october 2002 and the official version dropped in january 2003. back then. the timing lined up with sk's august 2003 acquisition of cyworld. once the cyworld minihompy craze hit its stride in 2004 nateon rode the same wave. one sk login covered your portal mail and your minihompy. the messenger came in the same envelope.
by may 2005 nateon had 7.54 million south korean users against msn's 6.5 million in the same country. the flip made local news. really though, by 2009 the subscriber count was ten million in a country of fifty. this was the pre-mobile chat rail of a whole generation of korean office workers and college students. i was reading about it in western tech writing as a curiosity, the same way cyworld showed up in early "korea has already done facebook" pieces.

| Subscribers | 10M by 2009 |
| Made by | SK Communications, an SK Telecom subsidiary at the time |
| MAU June 2024 | 399,658 across Android and iOS combined |
| Killed | November 2025 when SK Group swapped it out for a professional business messenger |
| Killed by | KakaoTalk on mobile from 2010 onward, then years of decay |
~ the slow fade ~
kakaotalk arrived on the iphone in march 2010 and did to nateon what nateon had done to msn. free sms replacement over data, with phone-number identity as your handle. group chats worked without any setup. the desktop client that had defined 2005 was no longer where people talked. by the mid 2010s nateon was mostly an office tool. the sk group employee base kept it running because it was the internal chat that ran on every work laptop.
the consumer app kept updating on the app store into 2024 with ads baked into the mobile version. by june 2024 the monthly active user count across android and ios had dropped to 399,658. nate communications killed the ads in october 2024 as part of a rescue project. the login flow got a face-lift. the number did not really move after that.
~ what actually ended in november ~
sk telecom sold its subsidiaries in january 2025. samkoo fs picked up nate communications for 7.04 billion won, give or take five million dollars for a service that once anchored the korean chat market. by november the parent group had swapped nateon out for a professional business messenger inside sk group. the last thing keeping it in daily use at any real scale was gone.
back then. the client is still installable in 2026. it still shows a contact list on the left and a chat window on the right, exactly as it did in 2005. what died in november 2025 was the last institutional reason to keep it open on a work laptop. that is a specific kind of death for a messenger, no shutdown notice on the login screen, just the day the office stopped needing it.
