Mythos

2007 - 2014
dead us
mythos was a free-to-play diablo clone built by flagship studios as a side project alongside the doomed hellgate: london. when flagship collapsed in july 2008, mythos went into hiatus with the rest of the studio. the korean publisher hanbitsoft bought the ip and ran a relaunched version on its own servers until january 22, 2014, when the korean servers shut down too.

~ the last words ~

i did not play mythos. by 2007-2008 i was finishing university and the only mmo i had any real connection to was the small turkish ultima online private server scene, which was a different planet from the western f2p arpg world that mythos lived in. mythos was a us product built by a us studio with us investor money, and it died with that studio before it ever shipped a finished version in english.

flagship studios was the company bill roper founded in 2003 after leaving blizzard north, the team that had built the original diablo and diablo 2. flagship's headline project was hellgate: london, the post-apocalyptic london diablo-clone that shipped in october 2007 to mixed reviews and a worse business model. mythos was the side project. flagship seattle, a small team led by travis baldree, was building a free-to-play multiplayer arpg that looked and played like classic diablo, with randomized maps and a high fantasy setting.

the closed beta started in 2007 and ran for a year. people who got into it generally liked it more than they liked hellgate. then hellgate's underperformance dragged flagship into a funding crunch, and on july 19, 2008, flagship announced mythos was going on hiatus. within weeks the studio was gone.

~ what happened to the team ~

the entire flagship seattle team, fourteen people, walked out together and founded runic games. travis baldree led them. their first product was torchlight in 2009, which sold over a million copies and effectively shipped the mythos design with the serial numbers filed off. torchlight 2 followed in 2012. then runic became part of perfect world, then shut down in 2017, but the design lineage from mythos to torchlight is direct and well documented.

that lineage is the reason mythos matters even though almost nobody played it under the mythos name. the same team, the same engine philosophy, the same combat feel: it just shipped under a different brand after the parent studio died.

~ the korean afterlife ~

the mythos ip got sold off in the flagship liquidation. hanbitsoft, a korean publisher, picked it up and partnered with t3 entertainment to finish the game as a korea-region f2p mmo. open beta started in april 2011. the korean version ran for nearly three years, with localized servers and a small dedicated player base.

the servers shut down on january 22, 2014. by then the western arpg market had moved on. path of exile had launched in 2013, diablo 3 was two years old, torchlight 2 had absorbed most of the spiritual-successor energy. hanbitsoft eventually released a single-player version of mythos on steam in september 2022, but that was a tomb-marker more than a game.

~ what got buried ~

the lesson buried with mythos was that the actual best version of a dead studio's vision usually ships somewhere else under a different brand. flagship investors lost their money. flagship the company stopped existing. but the people who built mythos went on to build torchlight, and torchlight begat torchlight 2, and the design idea was preserved in the only form that mattered, the form players could actually buy and play.
