Merc Storia

2014 - 2025
dead asia
happy elements has now done this twice. merc storia ended at 15:00 on 27 february 2025, eleven years after the android release, and an offline app holding the whole story had gone up the day before. the company was still shipping updates to that archive in july 2026, sixteen months after the game it preserves had stopped answering.

~ the goodbye ~

Merc Storia reached Android on 31 January 2014 and iOS eighteen days later. A free-to-play phone RPG, it put a healer where the fighter usually goes, written in Japanese with a coinage rather than an existing word, and the premise ran from there: you traveled with a creature collection you had talked down rather than beaten down.

Every title it ever carried was about a sound. It launched as Merc Storia: the Healer and the Chime of the Bell, was overhauled in 2018 into the Healer and the Tone of the Bell, and the thing Happy Elements built to outlive it in 2025 is called the Healer and the Melody of the Heart. Three subtitles across eleven years, and every one of them names a sound.

A PC client arrived on AndApp in November 2017. No English service ever did, which is the ordinary condition for a mid-sized Japanese phone RPG. Nobody picked it up for the West and nobody was expected to. The game ran its whole eleven years for the country it was written in.

Happy Elements announced the ending on 27 November 2024, three months out. The final chapter of the main story's second part went live on 31 January 2025, on the game's eleventh birthday. The service stopped at 15:00 on 27 February.

~ what Happy Elements did twice ~

This site already holds a grave for Last Period, another Happy Elements title, which ended in December 2022 after the company had quietly put an offline build of the whole story on the stores five days earlier. At the time that read as a single studio making a decent call about a single game.

Merc Storia makes it a habit. Same publisher and the same move, over a longer run and into a bigger archive. On 26 February 2025, the day before the servers stopped, Happy Elements released Merc Storia: the Healer and the Melody of the Heart, carrying the main story alongside more than eighty event stories. It also added epilogue appearances showing where the cast ended up, which the live game never got to show. A Steam build followed on 19 March.

~ eleven years, still downloadable ~

The announcement in November 2024 came with a second app on the same day: a free casual spin-off starring Filia, one of a pair of side games the studio put out in the game's last year. The other had arrived in March 2024. Neither was a sequel, and neither was sold.

The memorial app is still on the Japanese App Store, and its most recent update is dated 17 July 2026, sixteen months after the thing it commemorates stopped running. The game's own domain now answers every request with a bare 403. One of those two facts is what a shutdown normally looks like; the other one took deliberate work, every year, from a company with nothing left to sell you.
