ラストピリオド (Last Period)

2016 - 2022
dead asia
six and a half years in, happy elements switched the servers off at three in the afternoon on 27 december 2022, and five days before that it had already put an offline build of the same game on the stores with the whole story and the galleries inside it. the live title called itself the story of an endless spiral. the memorial app calls itself the story of the spiral that was spun, past tense. on 10 may 2026, ten years to the day after the android launch, the dead game received a newly written chapter.

~ the last words ~

Most mobile games die the same way. The servers go off and everything inside the app becomes unreachable in one afternoon. The story you followed for years and the art you paid real money for are simply gone, and what survives is whatever screenshots other people happened to take.

Last Period did not do that. Happy Elements ended the online service at three in the afternoon on 27 December 2022, six and a half years after the Android launch on 10 May 2016. Five days earlier, on 22 December, the company had already put a second app on the stores: an offline build carrying the whole main story and the galleries, readable forever with no server involved.

The subtitle changed with it. The live game was Owarinaki Rasen no Monogatari, the story of an endless spiral, retitled in an August 2019 overhaul to Meguriau Rasen, the spiral that meets again. The memorial app is Tsumugareshi Rasen, the spiral that was spun. A studio moved its own dead game into the past tense, which is a more careful piece of writing than most shutdown notices manage.

~ the early days ~

It was a free-to-play RPG about Periods, hunters paid to put down the monsters called Spirals, and it opened with the hero's branch office being closed for incompetence. Happy Elements played it for comedy in a way most gacha titles do not attempt, then spent six years walking that comedy toward a first-part ending in which the hero fails to save the person he set out to save. Over five million downloads in Japan, and a twelve-episode J.C.Staff anime that ran from 12 April to 28 June 2018 and reached the West through Crunchyroll.

The memorial build was not a gesture made after the fact. It shipped before the servers went dark rather than after, so players crossed over without a gap, and the refund window for unspent paid currency stayed open until the end of February 2023.

Then on 10 May 2026, ten years to the day after the Android launch, Happy Elements updated it. Not a maintenance patch: a newly written story set past the ending, with new units drawn by the original character designer. There is an anniversary site alongside it and a new piece of music whose title translates to something like the far side of the final full stop.

A game that had been switched off for three and a half years received original content this year. That is not how dead software behaves.

~ the funny part ~

I did not play this one. Japanese gacha RPGs stayed inside Japan at the storefront level for most of their lives, and in 2016 I was thirty two and writing software for a living rather than rolling for units. Last Period is filed here for the ending rather than for the game.

The 2010s taught everyone that buying things inside a live service means renting them until the publisher decides otherwise, and this site holds a long row of graves that make the point. Happy Elements took the other position, quietly, for a title that was never big enough to force anybody's hand. The story still opens on a phone with airplane mode switched on.
