~ the obit ~
Maxmodels.pl was where Polish modeling actually happened online for eighteen years. The agencies had their own websites and their own gatekeeping. This was the layer underneath, where a girl in Katowice with four photographs and an ambition found a photographer in Wroclaw with a rented studio and an empty Saturday. You made a portfolio and you got ranked, you arranged the shoot in the forum, and the pictures came back onto the site as everybody's portfolio at once.
The founding year took some digging, because the Polish press covering the closure did not have one. Fotopolis put it "at the beginning of the 2000s", headlines said twenty years, and one piece placed the site's peak at the turn of the 2000s and 2010s. The registry is firmer than any of them: maxmodels.pl was created at NASK on 8 February 2008, and the oldest copy in the Internet Archive is from 11 March 2008, a month later, already showing portfolio categories for models and for the photographers and stylists working around them. Nothing earlier exists on that domain, so 2008 is the year and the round twenty was somebody's estimate.
Growth was fast enough that Interia.pl, one of the big Polish portals, bought it on 14 May 2009, when it had 38,500 users and around half a million photographs. Tymkowski stayed on to run the development, which is a less common outcome than acquisition notices usually suggest. Under Interia it picked up a mobile app and an international edition, plus the contests and magazine sections a portal knows how to sell against. By the end, the operator's own numbers were 626,000 accounts opened and 5.6 million photographs uploaded.

~ the schedule ~
The notice went up on 13 November 2025 under the heading "Dziękujemy, że byliście z nami", meaning thank you for being with us. It said the service would end its activity on 20 January 2026 and gave the account and photograph totals. Most of it was spent thanking users for the sessions and the friendships that had come out of the site, with a link at the bottom to a second article carrying the practical details. The reason Interia offered the press was that the decision followed from changing market realities and the difficulty of maintaining the project, which is the corporate way of declining to answer.
That second article set the stages. New content stopped on 9 December 2025, which is the part that actually ends a community: once nobody can upload, the ranking stops moving and the forum goes quiet weeks before the servers do. The shutdown itself landed on 20 January as promised.
I have no claim on this one. Maxmodels ran in Polish for an industry I have never worked in, and it did its real business in the years I was finishing university and starting work on other things entirely. What makes it worth a stone is the size of it. A site almost nobody outside Poland had heard of was holding 5.6 million photographs when it closed.
~ what the domain says now ~
maxmodels.pl still resolves. Every URL on it returns a 404 page, and that page carries one Polish sentence: on 20 January 2026 the service was switched off, thank you for being with us. Underneath it is a link to Interia's front page and a copyright line reading 1999 to 2025, which belongs to the parent and not to the thing that died.
It is a better tombstone than most. Twenty years of a national hobby industry gets one sentence and a link to the portal that bought it, served under the status code for a page that was never there.
~ what came after ~
A replacement appeared almost immediately. 7px.pl launched as a new service for models and photographers, pitched directly at the people Maxmodels had just stranded, and the Polish photography press covered it as the successor in the same breath as the obituary. It starts from zero on the only thing that was hard to build here, which is twenty years of people having already worked with each other.
Interia did give users a window to download their own files, so the photographs themselves are not the loss. The loss is the credit. A shoot on Maxmodels carried the model and the photographer as linked portfolios, with the retoucher and the stylist hanging off the same record, and an export gives you back a folder of pictures with none of those names attached to them.
