Hike Rush

2021 - 2025

hike rush was the second act of kavin bharti mittal, the founder who had built hike messenger to 100 million registered users during its 2012-2020 run before winding the messenger down in january 2021. the pivot became rush gaming universe, a mobile real-money gaming platform running 14 casual titles like carrom, pool, ludo variants with cash entry fees and cash payouts, plus web3 features layered on top for player ownership. rush hit about 10 million users and roughly $500 million in cumulative gross revenue over four years, backed by investors including justin mateen at midi ventures. on 13 september 2025 mittal emailed investors that hike was shutting down completely across every office (india, us, dubai, singapore). the trigger was india's promotion and regulation of online gaming act 2025, a law passed in august that banned any online game involving real money entry fees or cash prizes.

~ the obituary ~

rush was india-only in every meaningful sense. the games it hosted (carrom, pool, ludo, teen patti variants) map onto a set of family and street-corner games that anyone who grew up in an indian household knows without having to think about, and translate poorly outside that context. in ankara my equivalent was tavla, which is not a thing you monetize through a 14-game mobile platform. so rush went past me at the product layer. what i tracked through the tech press was the founder story, because the founder story ties back into hike messenger, which was the india-specific whatsapp alternative that briefly looked like it might reach global scale.

hike messenger launched on 11 december 2012. kavin bharti mittal, son of bharti enterprises chairman sunil bharti mittal, built it as an india-first messenger with stickers and offline features tuned for cheap android phones and low data plans. by 2016 it was at 100 million registered users. tencent and softbank led a funding round that valued the company at more than $1 billion. the peak valuation touched about $1.4 billion. tiger global and foxconn were on the cap table. for a stretch of 2016 and 2017 hike looked like it might do to whatsapp in india what wechat had done to whatsapp in china.

that never happened. whatsapp was already at scale in india by then, its network effect kept compounding, hike could not close the gap. by 2019 the messenger's monthly active user count was falling. in january 2021 mittal shut the messenger down, kept the company, and pivoted to gaming.

~ what rush actually was ~

rush was not a single game. it was a wrapper platform hosting 14 casual mobile titles, each playable for a small cash entry fee against a real cash payout to the winner. the games were the ones indian phone users already understood without a tutorial. carrom, 8-ball pool, ludo variants, a few card games. the core insight was that the indian mobile gaming market at that time was split between free-to-play with in-app purchases (which the average user did not spend on) and full gambling (which was legally gray). skill-based real-money games at small ticket sizes threaded that middle path.

the web3 layer got added around 2022. players could nominally own their in-game inventory through nfts, though the practical use of that layer stayed shallow. the real product was the cash-in cash-out loop. by 2024 rush had crossed 10 million registered users. cumulative gross revenue over the four years of the platform reached about $500 million. staff count was around 100 across four offices between india and abroad.

~ the law that killed it ~

india's promotion and regulation of online gaming act was tabled and passed through parliament in august 2025. the law drew a line that skill-based real-money games had always sat just barely inside of, and put every rush-shaped business on the wrong side of it. any online game with cash entry fees or cash payouts became illegal, full stop, no distinction between skill and chance. the industry response was fast. dream11, mpl, several smaller platforms either shut down or pivoted overnight to virtual-currency-only play, which crushed the unit economics.

on 13 september 2025 mittal sent an investor email announcing the complete shutdown of hike. the india rmg operation was commercially finished. scaling the platform outside india would require a full recapitalization at a moment when the market did not want to fund an india real-money gaming founder pivoting to new geographies. mittal wrote in the linkedin post that followed that closing rush was closing a chapter and opening a new one, which is the polite tech-press language for we are out of runway and options.

~ the next chapter ~

rush leaves behind a specific fact pattern useful for thinking about regulatory-death risk in high-growth vertical categories. hike messenger died to whatsapp's network effect, a slow market-share death over five years. rush died to a single act of parliament, a single day. the platform was operationally healthy on all standard metrics right up to the ban. no runway shortage, no churn crisis in the metrics people had been tracking. the government just changed the rules and the business was over. that is a different death vector from most of the india startup collapse cohort of 2024-2025, where the trigger was fundraising failure. rush's story sits next to fanduel and draftkings in the us before daily fantasy sports regulation, or paypal cutting off jennicam over an anti-nudity policy in 2003. the underlying business worked until the pipe upstream was closed.
