~ the eulogy ~
i missed this one on every axis. i was in my late thirties when it came out, not the crowd walking around casting spells, and my whole gaming history is on old ultima online shards and pc games, not augmented reality on a phone. i watched the Pokemon Go wave from a distance in 2016 and understood why it worked. wizards unite was the sequel nobody i knew ever mentioned.
the game came out in june 2019, built by Niantic with WB Games and published under the Portkey Games label that Warner Bros used for its Harry Potter titles. it ran on the exact machinery that made Pokemon Go a phenomenon: your real location and your phone camera, with things to find by physically going outside. instead of pocket monsters you tracked down magical creatures and objects scattered across the world and cleared them with spell gestures on the screen.
the opening numbers were fine, over ten million installs and a warm enough reception. it just did not hold. Pokemon Go worked partly because catching a familiar monster on your street was instantly legible, and the potter version asked for more patience than most players had. the daily habit never formed, and a location game with no crowd is just a dead map.

~ the day it died ~
Niantic announced the shutdown on 2 november 2021 and gave players a couple of months before pulling the game from the app stores on 6 december. it went fully offline at 12:01am on 31 january 2022. everything you had built inside it, the collection and the levels mapped onto your neighborhood, stopped existing at once, the way a live-service game always does when the servers go dark.
~ what got buried with it ~
the interesting part is what it proved. Niantic had the best location-game engine anyone had built and one of the biggest entertainment brands on earth, and it still could not make lightning strike twice. Pokemon Go was not a formula you could paste onto any franchise. wizards unite is the clean evidence that the magic was in the specific thing, not the machine underneath it. the engine kept running for other games. this one just became a licensing footnote.
