Clash Mini

2021 - 2024
dead
eleven countries ever got to play this one. supercell put clash mini into beta in november 2021 as a board game version of its own characters, kept it there through two and a half years of reworks, then announced on 14 march 2024 that the game was good but not good enough to be a supercell game. servers went off on 25 april. the unusual part is what happened afterward, because supercell normally buries these and this time it moved the corpse into clash royale.

~ the obituary ~

Supercell announced Clash Mini on 8 April 2021, one of three Clash spinoffs revealed the same day. The beta went live on 8 November 2021 in Finland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Canada. On 14 March 2024 the studio said it was ending development, and the servers went off on 25 April 2024. The game never had a launch. Its entire existence was a soft launch that ran for two and a half years and then stopped.

What it was: a board game built out of Clash of Clans characters. You placed little figures on a grid and the round resolved itself while you watched. The skill was all in placement and in upgrade order rather than in tapping. The genre had a hot year around 2019 and Supercell arrived at it late, carrying one of the strongest character rosters in mobile gaming and a version the team kept saying was close.

The reason given for killing it is worth quoting because most studios will not say it out loud. Supercell called Clash Mini "a good game but not the game that would ultimately fulfill our dream", which is a company admitting that the bar an internal project has to clear is not whether it works.

~ eleven countries ~

The beta list grew over time and ended up covering Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Iceland, Norway, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden and the Philippines. Turkey was never on it. If you were outside those eleven store regions, and most of the world was, the game was a thing you watched other people play on video for two and a half years and then read an obituary about.

That is Supercell's standing method rather than an accident. Clash Quest and Rush Wars both died in the same regional half-light, visible enough to build an audience and never available enough to have a release date. Clash Mini stayed up longer than either of them.

~ the funny part ~

Clash Mini closing was written up everywhere as the continuation of a drought: Supercell had not globally launched a new game since Brawl Stars in 2018, and here it was cancelling another one. Brawl Stars stayed the last worldwide release until mo.co arrived in 2025, and every title announced in between was buried in beta.

~ what moved into Clash Royale ~

Before the shutdown, players who had spent money could write to support and have their purchases moved into another Supercell title, with Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars among the options, as long as the same Supercell ID was attached to both. That is a better exit than most dead mobile games offer.

Then the team did something Supercell does not do: it kept the design. The promise in the March 2024 post was to bring the Clash Mini experience into Clash Royale, and in 2025 it turned up there as a mode. The game is dead and the thing it was is still being played, under a bigger name, by people who never lived in the eleven countries.
