Google Wallet (2011)

~ the obituary ~
this one was a united states story at the carrier layer, so it never arrived in my pocket. tap-to-pay reached turkey later, and when it did it came through the banks and their contactless cards, not through a google app that only ran on the right phone in the right country. i knew what it was as an engineer, near-field payment off a chip in the handset, and i knew the idea was right. what i never had was the thing itself. almost nobody did.
Google showed it off at a press event on 26 may 2011 and shipped the app in the united states on 19 september that year. you loaded a card into your phone, then tapped the phone against a contactless reader to pay. the technology worked. the problem was everything around it. at launch it ran on essentially one handset on one carrier, Sprint, because the other big american carriers were not going to hand google a spot on the payment rail for free.
those carriers had their own plan. the other big american carriers were building a rival wallet, the venture that became [[softcard]], and they were in a position to keep google's app off the phones they sold. so the original wallet spent its whole life boxed into a corner of the market it was invented for, technically fine and practically stuck.

~ the slide ~
a payment product that only some people on some networks can use is not really a payment product, it is a demo that shipped. the original wallet never got the distribution to become a habit. it also arrived before the banks and card networks had agreed on how any of this should work, which meant google was pushing against the carriers on one side and an unsettled industry on the other. the pieces were not in place, and no amount of good engineering on the handset fixed that.
~ what it became ~
google took the lesson and restarted. at Google I/O in 2015 it introduced Android Pay, the same tap-to-pay idea but built this time with the banks and card networks lined up behind it, and it swallowed the original wallet's job. the google wallet name kept bouncing around after that, shrinking to a peer-to-peer money app and later getting renamed to google pay, but the 2011 product, the first one, the carrier-blocked one, was done in 2015. it sits with [[softcard]] and [[currentc]], the other early wallets that proved paying by phone was a fight over who owned the gate, not whether the phone could do it.
