~ the eulogy ~
by the time i would have signed up to google duo, every person i would have called on it was already on whatsapp. duo launched in august 2016 with the pitch that it was a clean encrypted one-to-one video call app with a phone-number identity. that pitch was four years late in turkey, whatsapp had already absorbed the video-call use case across my contact list by 2014. i installed duo once to test it on a pixel review unit, made one call to a colleague who also had a pixel, then never opened it again.
duo was announced at google i/o on may 18 2016 alongside allo, the matching text-messaging app. both products were positioned as the consumer half of a google messaging reset after the hangouts pivot to enterprise. duo shipped on august 16 2016 for android and ios, allo a month later. the design pitch on duo was knock knock, a feature that showed the recipient a live camera preview of the caller before the call was accepted. it was a smart product detail. it did not change the fact that the people on the other end were not on google duo.
the product had a longer life than allo on paper but a thinner one in practice. allo was discontinued in march 2019 after about thirty months of life. duo kept shipping updates until 2022, added group calling in 2020 during the pandemic, hit a peak of around a hundred million monthly active users on the back of zoom-era video demand. google announced the meet merger in june 2022. the android app was renamed from duo to meet in november 2022. ios followed shortly after. the duo url, duo.google.com, still resolves in 2026 but redirects to the meet landing page.
duo was not the worst google messaging product. it was the cleanest of the five video-call attempts the company shipped between 2005 and 2022. talk had a video plug-in, hangouts replaced it, hangouts split into hangouts chat and hangouts meet for enterprise, allo briefly had a video tab, duo arrived as the standalone consumer app, then meet absorbed duo. the cleanest video product was also the latest one in a sequence the user had stopped trusting around the third repeat.

~ the knock knock feature ~
knock knock was the part of duo that got talked about at launch. when an incoming call came in, the recipient saw a live preview of the caller's front camera before tapping to accept, which let you see whether the person on the other end was at their desk or holding the phone at a bad angle in the car. it was a small design touch that solved a real problem with cold video calls, where you accept a call and immediately discover the caller is in a setting you would not have called into yourself.
the feature shipped on day one and persisted through the meet merger. meet picked up knock knock as an inherited capability when the duo codebase was folded in. the underlying calling stack on duo was webrtc with google's own server-side mixing and end-to-end encryption on the call signaling layer, which carried over cleanly into the meet consumer product after the rename.
~ the long fade ~
the meet merger was announced in june 2022, the actual transition ran through the second half of 2022 into 2023. the duo app on android was renamed to meet in november 2022, the icon and launch screen switched while the underlying account and contact list stayed in place. the original meet app for enterprise meetings was renamed to meet legacy and kept as a separate install for a transition window, then quietly retired in january 2026.
the duo brand was a four-letter word that disappeared from google's product listing in late 2022. for the user base who had installed duo specifically for the one-to-one video call use case, the rename to meet was the moment the product they had picked turned into a different product with a different design pitch. meet was an enterprise meetings tool that had been retrofitted to handle consumer one-to-one calls. duo had been the opposite, a consumer video call tool that handled meetings as an add-on. the merger flipped that frame.
