~ the goodbye ~
gas was the kind of thing american high schoolers used. i was not in that demographic in 2022, i was thirty-eight, working in computer engineering, and the polls it surfaced from your address book would not have had four schoolmates to fill in even if i had installed it out of curiosity. the product was tuned for a very narrow slot, ages fifteen to seventeen inside a us high school with an iphone.
nikita bier had run the same shape once already. his prior app tbh had shipped in august 2017 and gone to number one in the us app store, then sold to facebook that october for around one hundred million dollars. facebook killed it nine months later citing low usage. bier and his cofounders relaunched the loop as gas on august 29 2022, in a handful of southern us states first, with a slightly reworked version of the same "who has the best smile" style poll pulled from your school directory.
gas went viral through the same regional-calibration pattern tbh had used. it opened in oklahoma and other southern states, moved north as installs and school-invite volume held. by early october it was number one on the us app store, over five million downloads, more than a million monthly actives. one paid tier at $6.99 called "god mode" surfaced a hint about who had voted for you.

~ the loop ~
the mechanic itself was tiny. you signed up, picked your school from a list, then the app pulled contacts and started serving polls. "who would you trust with your secrets", that kind of thing. you tapped one of four options. that person got an anonymous note saying someone in their grade had picked them. no chat, no profile stalking. the whole product was the compliment moment and the notification badge.
what tbh and gas both had was the discipline to not let anonymous messaging turn into anonymous harassment. every poll was framed as a positive statement, with no free-text input allowed anywhere in the app. by the time bier shipped gas he had already been through the moderation gauntlet twice before and knew where the failure modes were.
~ how it landed ~
gas hit the same wall tbh had hit, though. the second wave of users was smaller than the first, and the returners found the same four contacts staring back at them in the prompt. schools where the initial cohort had already graduated aged out of the whole app inside a semester. by early january 2023 the daily-download curve was flattening, and bier moved to sell before the numbers turned decisively.
discord announced the acquisition on january 17 2023, the same tone as facebook's tbh deal in 2017. the reported price was around one hundred million, though neither company confirmed. bier tweeted "sold my company five years ago to the world's largest consumer app. today i sold my company to the next largest one." discord was hoping to inject a younger cohort into its user base by absorbing gas.
~ the postmortem ~
by mid-2023 gas's usage had continued to fall inside discord's ownership. the app was no longer trending. the second-wave audience was small, the retention past the first week was thin. on october 19 2023 discord ceo jason citron told employees the app would be wound down. the shutdown itself came on november 7 2023, about nine months after the acquisition closed.
that was the second time nikita bier had shipped a compliment app to number one and sold it to a big consumer platform that switched it off within a year of closing. the reason is not that either buyer was careless, it is that a high-school compliment loop peaks in the calendar it launches in and cannot be turned into a curve that flatters a quarterly board deck. bier moved on to advising other founders and joined X in 2024. the loop itself is still out there, waiting for its next reincarnation, which someone is probably building right now.
