X Communities

2021 - 2026

twitter announced communities at analyst day in february 2021 and started the beta on september 8 2021. it was meant to be a reddit-style topic forum inside twitter where posts only went to community members but stayed publicly visible. it never crossed 0.4% of platform usage. by 2026 the feature was responsible for eighty percent of x's spam reports. nikita bier announced the shutdown for may 6 2026 and pushed it to may 30 after backlash. group chats and a grok-powered custom timeline replaced it on paper.

by the time x communities mattered, the platform had already become musk's twitter and i was not in the beta-feature mood there anymore. honestly, the only reason i ever opened the communities tab was a misclick. anyway, the feature lived as a sub-section of the left rail menu for most of its life, surfaced by a small icon that looked like three stacked people, and i never had a reason to scroll past my main timeline into the dedicated topic-feed view that communities offered.

twitter teased communities at the company's analyst day in february 2021 as a reddit-style topic forum living inside twitter. the beta opened on september 8 2021 with the first set focused on dogs, weather, sneakers, skin care, astrology. in those days. the pitch was that you could post a tweet only to community members instead of all your followers, with replies restricted to other members, while the tweets themselves stayed publicly visible to non-members reading them on the web.

i was not paying attention to the rollout, but anyway, the public-visible-private-replies mix was a hybrid that did not match how reddit or discord worked. either way, that confused both sides of the supposed user base. people who wanted a forum wanted a private discussion. people who wanted a tweet wanted a public reply. communities sat in the middle and never picked one.

the musk acquisition in october 2022 inherited communities and let them keep ticking without putting much engineering against them. through 2023 and 2024 the feature drifted into a state where the active communities were mostly run by accounts pushing affiliate links, kick streamers paid for clip-and-post traffic, and a long tail of crypto and onlyfans funnels. the legit ones were a smaller subset of the dog and weather kind from launch week.

the wind-down announcement came in april 2026 from nikita bier, x's head of product. communities accounted for less than 0.4% of platform usage while generating eighty percent of all spam reports, eighty percent of all financial-scam and malware reports filed against x. honestly, bier called the feature "a temu version of subreddits" in the same week. the original kill date was may 6 2026, extended to may 30 after community moderators pushed back on the seven-day notice.

~ how it landed ~

the september 2021 launch coverage was warmer than the feature deserved. tech press wrote it up as twitter finally building groups, which the platform had wanted since at least the 2009 lists feature. the early communities had moderators recruited by twitter itself, with a small set of beta users invited to join the launch cohort. it felt like a managed product launch rather than an organic one.

the friction was that joining a community required a separate flow from following an account. either way, the average twitter user already had a timeline of accounts they followed and a search box, and adding a third surface that required learning new rules was a step too many. honestly, the people who would have wanted reddit-style forums already had reddit.

~ the musk inheritance ~

post-acquisition x's product team had a lot of bigger fights to pick than communities. the feature kept running on whatever infrastructure twitter had built for it in 2021, with minimal updates through 2023 and 2024. the moderation tools that had been promised at launch never really shipped at the scale that would have kept the spam down. community owners were left with a thin set of tools against a steadily growing flood of bot accounts.

the shift toward x as an "everything app" under musk did not include communities in any of the public planning. honestly, xchat (the group-chat product launched in 2025) absorbed the social-graph part of what communities tried to do. either way, the focus moved to group chats with a five-hundred-person cap (later raised to a thousand) and to ai-generated custom timelines powered by grok. communities sat outside both of those rebuilds.

~ what really happened ~

the april 2026 shutdown post from bier was unusually candid for an x product wind-down. it laid out the usage and spam numbers, named the feature as a net negative for platform safety, and gave a hard date. the may 6 kill date got pushed to may 30 after community moderators flagged that seven days was not enough time to export member lists or migrate to group chats. the extension was the only concession.

on may 30 the communities tab disappeared from the left rail. honestly, existing community urls now redirect to a generic "this community is no longer available" page. the member lists were exported into account-owned csv files for thirty days after, then deleted. anyone who built a discord migration plan in those four weeks had a way out, anyone who did not lost the network in place.
