Doppler Labs Here One

~ the eulogy ~
the here one was a US-marketed, universal-music-branded product from the start. it did not reach turkey through official channels and i did not go looking for it. either way, the pitch (real-time augmented listening in a pair of earbuds) was the interesting part, less the actual product on sale. doppler labs is the second startup in this graveyard that tried to sell the world on a computer in your ear before the airpods anchor arrived and made the whole category legible to normal people.
noah kraft and fritz lanman founded doppler labs in 2013 in new york. the first product was "here active listening", a $199 accessory sold at coachella and other festivals that let you attenuate specific frequency bands (bass, midrange) with a phone-app equaliser and physically hear the changed mix in the earbuds. it was pitched to musicians and concert-goers, not to a mass market. it worked well enough to attract a founding round.
the company raised over $50 million across a seed round and two subsequent B-round tranches. investors included universal music group and live nation on the strategic side, with the chernin group leading the financial rounds and wildcat capital joining alongside. that funding mix mattered. universal and live nation gave doppler a plausible go-to-market story into the live-music industry that no other earbud startup had. the pitch inside those meetings was "we are building the next platform for how people experience live sound".

~ the augmented listening pitch ~
the here one shipped in february 2017 at $299. two in-ear buds paired with an iphone app that let the user tune the world around them: turn up voices at a dinner table, drop out subway noise on a commute, adjust the eq of a concert mix in the venue. the underlying dsp was real and the reviewers who tried it in a quiet room reported that the frequency-tuning actually worked as advertised. this was not vaporware.
what did not work was the physics. running two active dsps in earbuds that also had to bluetooth to a phone drained the batteries at a rate the industrial design could not accommodate. real-world battery life came in around two to three hours before the buds needed to go back in the case, and the case itself had limited recharge capacity. the review consensus by mid-2017 was that the here one was the most interesting audio product of the year and also that no normal person should buy one, because it kept dying mid-use.
~ what really happened ~
about 25,000 units sold through 2017. that was an order of magnitude below the internal targets. the company pursued a series C through the summer and by autumn had exhausted a shortlist of strategic acquirers that included apple and google alongside the other big-five names in that period. none of those conversations closed. doppler labs announced on 1 november 2017 that it was winding down. the company officially ceased operations on 1 december 2017.
the here one apps kept working for existing owners for a while after the shutdown but the cloud services degraded through 2018 as the servers were spun down. the intellectual property was picked up in fragments by other hearables firms and by dolby. some of the engineering team moved to bose or to apple's hardware group. noah kraft himself moved on to unrelated ventures. the doppler brand did not survive the shutdown as a going concern.
~ what got buried with it ~
in fairness, doppler was three years too early for its own thesis. the airpods pro shipped in october 2019 with active noise cancellation and transparency mode built in as first-class features. that product delivered a compressed version of the "augmented listening" promise at scale to hundreds of millions of buyers. doppler had the design intention right and could not afford to wait for the enabling battery and silicon to catch up.
the here one and the bragi dash are the two hearable startups most often mentioned in the same paragraph. both raised significant venture money on the "computer in your ear" thesis in the 2014-to-2016 window. both shipped a product that was closer to the eventual airpods than most people remember. neither made it to the mass market because the physics for a battery-hungry all-day-wearable ear computer arrived two apple hardware generations after doppler's runway ran out.
