~ the last words ~

dauntless was a free-to-play monster hunter clone, the kinda thing a younger pc-and-console crowd kept up with on weekends. that was not me by 2019. by then i was on edge-ai work in ankara and not running an action rpg about hunting behemoths on whatever desktop was free at home. the closest i got to the genre was watching a friend's monster hunter world clip on a phone, which is not really the same thing.

phoenix labs was a vancouver studio founded by ex-bioware and ex-riot leads in 2014. the dauntless open beta opened in may 2018 with a single-shard model and cross-progression across pc with ps4 and xbox one to follow (close enough). the retail launch on september 26 2019 was the marketing peak. epic games published the console versions through the epic store. by that launch window the registered-player count had crossed 15 million across platforms.

the next five years were a quieter live-service curve. nintendo switch came in 2019, ps5 and series x in late 2021. the cadence of new behemoths and balance patches kept a smaller audience around. then the owner changed.

~ what it was ~

dauntless was structured like monster hunter with the friction sanded off. four-player co-op, faster encounter loops, no zone load times between hunts, free to start. the appeal was that capcom's monster hunter was still hard to find on pc in 2018 and on consoles outside japan was a paid game. dauntless was the western free option that ran on a low-end rig.

the monetization was cosmetic-first. battle passes and skins, no premium weapons in the early years. that was the founding pitch and it held for most of the run. anyway, behemoths were the content unit. each one had a fight pattern and a weapon set you could craft from its parts, slotted into the elemental rock-paper-scissors. close enough. the loop was the loop, and the loop worked.

~ the fall ~

this part you had to be in the live-service crowd for, and i was not. the cracks opened in 2023 when forte labs, a blockchain-gaming infrastructure firm, bought phoenix labs outright. forte had no live-service operating history. the layoffs started immediately, more than a hundred staff cut in may 2024, the project went into maintenance with a smaller team.

the awakening update on december 5 2024 was the breaking point. weapon crafting was removed, every player's progression was reset, most weapons were locked behind a premium battle pass. steam reviews tanked to overwhelmingly negative inside a week. the awakening update was framed as a fresh start. the existing player base read it as a wipe of six years of accumulated craft.

~ the actual end ~

january 2025 brought another round of layoffs that took out the majority of remaining staff. the shutdown announcement landed in february, the date set for may 29 2025 at 11:45 pm pacific. no migration, no offline mode, no private servers, no goodbye event of any real shape. the digital storefronts pulled the listings, refunds went only to people who had bought the awakening battle pass in the final months.

dauntless sits alongside firefall and wildstar on the short list of free-to-play co-op rpgs that survived their open beta and the first patch cycle, but not the second owner. anyway, the inheritance is the loop itself: cross-platform progression, no zone loads, free entry, cosmetic battle pass. that template kept showing up in later monster hunter clones. the studio that built it was wound down before the servers were.
