by the time viddler might have meant something to me, it had already stopped being for people like me. it began as a video sharing site in the youtube years, one of the several that launched into the same moment hoping to be the place people uploaded their clips. i never used it. it surfaced for me later as a name on a list of dead video platforms, and this is reconstructed from what i read after.
viddler was founded in november 2005 by robert sandie and three co-founders, in bethlehem, pennsylvania, and it launched to the public in december 2006. the early idea was a community for video enthusiasts, personal uploads paid for by advertising, with a few features ahead of their time. the best one let you attach a comment to a specific moment inside a video rather than only underneath it.
that consumer version did not last. around 2010 viddler turned toward business customers, corporate training and education, the unglamorous work that actually paid. in 2011 it stopped taking new personal accounts, and in 2014 it told the old ones to upgrade to paid or download their videos and leave. the enthusiasts it started with were shown the door on the way to becoming a vendor.

~ what it was ~
the in-video commenting was the piece worth remembering. on most sites of the era your comment just went in a pile below the player, but viddler let you pin a note to the exact second you were talking about, which is an obvious idea that somehow still is not standard. for a stretch it also had a clean embeddable player that got it onto a lot of other people's sites.
none of that was enough to win a market where youtube had google behind it and everyone else was fighting for the leftovers. the pivot to enterprise was less a strategy than a survival move, the one door left open once the consumer side was clearly lost.
~ the long tail ~
as a business tool it lasted a remarkably long time. viddler quietly served corporate and education clients for another decade, and by its own count it streamed billions of views across millions of videos for over two thousand clients in more than 150 countries. it finally shut the whole thing down on march 3 2025, more than eighteen years after it launched. that is a long life for a company most people stopped thinking about around 2012.
