Deceit
~ the obituary ~
Deceit went up on Steam on 3 March 2017 as a free-to-play horror game with one idea in it. Six players wake up in the dark with no memory of how they got there. Two of them have been infected and know who the other one is. Everybody has to work through a map divided into stages to reach the exit, and the infected have to kill without being watched doing it.
The hook was the blackout. At set points the lights go out and an infected player can turn into a monster for a few seconds, which is long enough to kill someone and not quite long enough to be identified for certain. It ran on CryEngine, which gave it better lighting than the genre bothered with in 2017 and left World Makers maintaining a codebase the rest of the market was walking away from.
It found a real audience. A free Steam game for six players with a premise built for streaming was a 2017 formula, and it worked three years before Among Us turned the same shape into a global phenomenon. Deceit's version had guns and a horror skin on it, and the arguing happened over voice chat rather than in a chat box.

~ what maintenance cost ~
World Makers announced the shutdown on 25 July 2025 and the reasons had nothing to do with a lack of players. The technology had aged into an easy DDoS target with a worsening cheating problem. On top of that, the studio said, compliance with new regulation around the world and particularly in the United Kingdom was putting weight on a system built to 2017 standards.
That last reason is the one worth noting, because it is new. The UK's online-safety duties came into force in stages through 2025 and they apply to any service that lets strangers talk to each other, which describes a free game from 2017 with open voice chat and a six-person lobby exactly. A studio that cannot fund the compliance work on a game that stopped earning years ago turns the game off. Token sales stopped first and the DLC came off the store. The servers closed on 6 November 2025.
~ the sequel kept the shape ~
Deceit 2 had already shipped in 2023 on a modern engine, so when the closure was announced the complaint from players was about a specific feel they were losing: the original's pace, and the particular panic of its blackouts. World Makers' answer was Legacy Mode, a rebuild of the first game's rules inside the sequel, described as bringing the iconic parts into a newer set of systems.
Whether a mode inside a sequel counts as the same game is a question each player answered for themselves. The original's Steam page is still there, and it still says Deceit is no longer available.
