~ the obituary ~
Nine Media Corporation told its staff and the public on 29 January 2024 that CNN Philippines was closing, and the channel went off air on the 31st. Two days of notice for a newsroom that had been running since March 2015.
Nine Media struck the brand licensing agreement with CNN Worldwide in 2014 and launched the channel on 16 March 2015, replacing a channel called 9TV on Radio Philippines Network's transmitters. It was the fifth CNN franchise in Asia. Programming was produced out of the Worldwide Corporate Center in Mandaluyong, with the analog transmitter sitting in the RPN compound in Quezon City.
The thing that made it distinctive also made it fragile. CNN Philippines broadcast predominantly in English on free-to-air television, in a country whose free-to-air audience overwhelmingly watches Filipino. That buys you credibility with advertisers who want an upmarket audience and it caps your ratings at a number those advertisers eventually stop paying for.

~ the licensing model ~
A CNN franchise is not a bureau. Atlanta does not staff it or fund it. A local broadcaster pays for the right to the name and the look, builds its own newsroom, and carries some CNN International feed alongside local output. The upside is instant brand recognition in a crowded market. The downside is that when the local partner's numbers go bad, there is no parent company to absorb the loss, only a contract that can be allowed to expire.
CNN has done this more times than most people realize, and the Turkish one is the version I grew up with. CNN Turk has been on air here since 1999, a local newsroom arguing about local politics under a logo made in Atlanta, and it is still running. The Philippine deal was the same shape signed fifteen years later, and it is the one that shows what happens when the arithmetic underneath stops working.
That is what happened. Nine Media and Warner Bros. Discovery Asia-Pacific ended the arrangement by mutual agreement, with the Philippine side citing significant financial losses sustained over several years despite what it called rigorous efforts to adapt.
~ the last week ~
The announcement came on 29 January 2024 and the channel was gone on the 31st. Staff were told along with everybody else, and Nine Media said severance packages would be provided to all affected. Nine years of newsroom, closed inside a working week.
~ what took the frequency ~
The channel space did not go dark for long. RPTV launched on it, co-owned by Nine Media and TV5 Network, in Filipino. The remaining news operation and its assets were folded into NewsWatch Plus under Nine Media's indirect parent, so some of the people and some of the equipment carried on under a name nobody outside the Philippines has heard of.
cnnphilippines.com is the cleanest evidence of how completely the brand was unwound. It answers nothing on https. On http it returns a Fastly error page stating that it does not recognize the domain, which is what a content delivery network says when the customer has stopped being a customer.
