Cartoonnetwork.com

1998 - 2024
dead us
cartoonnetwork.com launched on july 27 1998 from the same atlanta team running cartoon network. for a quarter century it was the flash-and-shockwave games portal where american kids played dexter's laboratory and powerpuff girls minigames after school. peak was october 2000, the month it pulled 2.12 million unique users and beat nick.com by a clear margin. cartoon orbit, the trading-card sub-experience, ran from october 2000 to october 16 2006. warner bros discovery shut the site down on august 8 2024 and redirected the domain to max.com's cartoon network hub.

~ the last words ~

cartoonnetwork.com was the kind of thing american kids ages eight to twelve used after school in the early 2000s. i was not in that demographic. by 1998 when the site launched i was already fourteen and on a 33.6k modem in turkey, doing my homework in star wars private-server forums and the early csgo precursors at the corner internet cafe. cartoon network as a tv channel did reach turkey eventually, but the cartoonnetwork.com site specifically wanted a us dial-up subscriber with a flash plugin and a parent paying for aol.

the domain was registered on january 9 1996 by what was then turner broadcasting, the site went live on july 27 1998. back then. the launch was timed to the rise of after-school computer access at home for the middle-class american kid, the demographic the channel had been chasing on television since the 1992 spinoff from tnt. by october 2000 the site was pulling 2.12 million unique users a month and outranking nick.com at 1.95 million, the first time a kids-portal had a measurable web peer competition (close enough).

the engine was flash and shockwave games tied to active properties on the channel. dexter's laboratory had its own game cluster and powerpuff girls had several more. the johnny bravo and edd-and-eddy sub-sites all came along too. the games were not deep but they were the only legal way to "play" with the characters before licensed console games existed for any of those properties. cartoon orbit, the digital trading-card meta-game launched in october 2000, was the closest the network came to a real platform play.

~ the flash years ~

the site peaked while flash was the runtime. by july 2007 nielsen had the average session at seventy-seven minutes per visitor, with cartoonnetwork.com ranked twenty-sixth across all us domains for time spent on site. honestly, that was a number a portal could not sustain once flash started its slow death after the 2010 jobs memo. the games stopped working in browsers progressively across 2017-2020 and the post-flash html5 ports never caught up to the back catalog.

~ what got buried with it ~

the august 8 2024 shutdown was a one-line decision from warner bros discovery and it took the whole archive down with it. anyway, cartoon orbit cards, flash game ports, behind-the-scenes clips, character-voice ringtones, the codename kids next door site, all of it became inaccessible at the same moment. some of the games had been mirrored to flashpoint and other flash preservation projects before the shutdown, but the wbd-side archive was not opened to anyone. the wayback machine has thin captures of the games but the swf assets themselves are mostly lost.

~ the long tail ~

this part you had to be in the us for, and i was not. honestly the shutdown landed at the same time as the cartoonito brand split and the broader wbd cost-cut sweep. the company line at the time was the focus had shifted toward "social media where we find consumers are the most engaged" which is the formal way of saying tiktok and youtube. by 2025 the cartoonnetwork domain was a redirect into max with a cn-branded landing tile, the entire web experience from 1998 to 2024 collapsed into one button.
