Brøderbund

1980 - 1998
dead us
brøderbund was the eugene-then-novato software publisher founded in 1980 by the carlston siblings. it shipped prince of persia and the print shop in the 80s, then carmen sandiego and myst in the 90s. the learning company acquired it on june 22 1998 for about $420 million in stock. mattel bought tlc the next year for $3.6 billion and effectively destroyed itself in the process. the brøderbund name has lived since as a licensing zombie under encore.

~ the goodbye ~

brøderbund never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a us-coded company at the licensing layer, with most of its catalog tied to american classroom culture (print shop posters for parent-teacher nights, carmen sandiego as a public-tv geography quiz) that did not have a real equivalent in the schools i went to. by the time i got online in 1998 the company was already inside the learning company. i caught the brand only as a label on cardboard sleeves in pirated cd compilations.

the company was founded in 1980 in eugene, oregon by doug and gary carlston, brothers who wanted to publish games on the apple ii. their sister cathy joined a year later. the name comes from the swedish brøderna ("brothers"). early hits included lode runner and karateka on apple ii. then came prince of persia in 1989 from jordan mechner. then in 1991 the print shop was already a household phrase and broderbund went public on nasdaq under bbnd.

the 1990s were the peak. myst shipped in 1993 and held the top of pc sales charts for years. by 1995 the stock hit $72.50 and the company was sitting on a catalog that spanned classroom software and adventure games without much overlap with anyone else in the industry.

~ how it landed ~

the carlston brothers ran brøderbund in a way that looked nothing like a 1990s us software company. they kept the catalog small and refused to acquire competitors during the consolidation wave. their definition of a hit was a product that stayed on shelves for a decade rather than one that posted a record opening quarter.

that worked when distribution was retail boxes in computer stores. when shareware and bundling came in the mid-90s, the model broke. brøderbund tried to scale by acquiring smaller houses, including learning services and parsoft, but the integration never produced the growth wall street wanted.

~ the decline ~

by 1997 the stock was sliding and the board was looking for a rescue. the learning company (already a roll-up of mecc, the children's brand, and several smaller education houses) made an all-stock offer that closed on june 22 1998 for roughly $420 million. the carlstons cashed out. brøderbund as an independent company stopped existing.

the timing turned out to be horrific for the buyer. mattel acquired tlc in 1999 for $3.6 billion in what is still cited as one of the worst tech acquisitions of the dot-com era. mattel wrote down the entire deal within months and ousted its ceo. by 2001 the entertainment titles went to ubisoft and the brøderbund brand itself went to riverdeep.

~ what remains ~

myst is the survivor with the longest tail. cyan rebuilt it on modern engines and shipped a vr version in 2021. carmen sandiego came back as netflix animation in 2019. prince of persia became a ubisoft franchise that swallowed the original developer credit. the print shop kept getting reissued every few years under different owners.

the brøderbund name today sits on encore's licensing rolodex, an asset that occasionally gets stamped on a discount-bin compilation. the family company that the carlstons built died at the acquisition table in 1998 and the brand has been an empty shell ever since.
