~ the eulogy ~
boomerang streaming did not reach me. by 2017 i was thirty-three, on edge-ai work in ankara, with no household reason to subscribe to a classic-cartoon app priced in us dollars. anyway, the licensing was us-first with a uk pass and a few european markets to follow. turkey was not one of them. the boomerang i knew was the linear cable feed that turner ran on turkish satellite packages in the 2000s, which is a different product.
the streaming app launched on 13 april 2017, built on the same platform warner used for the early hbo now stack, priced at $4.99 a month at the start, $5.99 by the final years. the catalog was the warner-turner classic library: scooby-doo and looney tunes as the flagships, with tom and jerry plus the flintstones underneath them on the schedule. about five thousand episodes by the final count, with rolling additions of the wacky races style midcentury cartoons that the linear channel had built its identity around.
the app sat in an awkward spot from day one. close enough. the same content was on dvd, on cable, on whatever toonami feed an asian or european cable provider was still carrying. the standalone-app pitch leaned on convenience and curation. for whatever reason, it never broke out the way disney+ would in 2019.
~ the dossier ~
| Born | 2017-04-13 (streaming app launch at $4.99 a month) |

| Killed | 2024-09-30 (app and website pulled, content rolled into Max) |
| Lifespan | around 7 years and 5 months |
| Made by | Turner Broadcasting / Warner Bros. Discovery |
| Killed by | the consolidation push that put every WBD library inside Max |
~ how it landed ~
the launch press in april 2017 framed boomerang streaming as a complement to the linear channel rather than a replacement. the strategy was to give parents of young kids a no-ads classic-cartoon library on whatever screen was free. the price point was set low against netflix kids and amazon prime kids, both of which carried newer original animation by then.
the app worked on roku, fire tv, apple tv, ios and android. it had downloads for offline play. the production-value floor on the apps was fine, the streaming worked, the curation followed a few warner-turner verticals: hanna-barbera on one side, looney tunes on the other. the gap between this app and what max would become four years later was where the death sat.
~ the day it died ~
this part you had to be in the wbd subscriber base for, and i was not, warner bros discovery announced the shutdown on 1 august 2024. the date was set for 30 september. existing subscribers were moved to the max ad-free tier with no price change for six months, an ad-free max sub was $16.99 a month against the $5.99 boomerang sub. close enough. that was the migration: a bigger library at the same price for half a year, then a normal max bill afterward.
the september 30 cutoff was clean. the apps stopped working, the boomerang.com domain redirected to max.com's cartoon network hub. anyway, refunds were not offered because the subscription was being upgraded rather than cancelled. the iconic boomerang library was now inside max alongside the rest of the warner catalog.
~ the long tail ~
the linear boomerang cable channel kept running on us cable and on international cable feeds. that is the part that confuses anyone reading the headline: the streaming app died, the brand did not. it is the same split that hit hbo go and hbo now. the channel persists, the standalone subscription product does not.
boomerang streaming sits with cartoonnetwork.com on the short list of warner discovery digital properties pulled in 2024 to consolidate inside max. anyway, the consolidation move had been telegraphed for two years before the streaming app actually died. the death itself was clean and quiet.
