~ the goodbye ~
bharatagri did not reach turkey. it was a very india-coded product built for a very india-specific customer, a small or mid-sized farmer running a few acres of cotton or soybean or vegetables somewhere in maharashtra or karnataka, ordering seed and fertilizer through a hindi or marathi language mobile app and calling an in-house agronomist through the same app for advice on when to spray. that customer does not exist in ankara. anyway, i learned about the company from inc42 shutdown coverage in late 2025.
siddharth dialani and sai gole started the company in 2017. both were iit madras alumni, dialani carrying a b.tech and m.tech in biotechnology. the initial pitch was ai-led farm advisory, roughly, a farmer describes a crop problem or a soil condition, the app returns a recommendation grounded in a growing model dataset. over the next few years the model shifted toward an agri-input e-commerce catalog on top of that advisory layer, because farmers who trusted the advice tended to also want to buy the seed or the pesticide through the same channel.
by the time the shutdown was announced the platform had crossed one million registered farmers. fy24 operating revenue landed at about ₹4.8 crore against a net loss of about ₹22 crore. the unit economics were positive on individual orders, the founders said, but overhead against the small basket sizes typical of agri-input orders never got the whole business to profit.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | 2017 in pune as an ai-led farm-advisory and agri-input e-commerce platform aimed at small indian farmers |
|---|---|
| Peak | over 1M registered farmers by 2025, FY24 revenue ~₹4.8 crore up 78% from FY23 |
| Killed | mid-November 2025 wind-down after a $6M-$8M bridge round did not close |
| Lifespan | about 8 years |
| Made by | Siddharth Dialani and Sai Gole, IIT Madras alumni |
| Killed by | investor hesitation on TAM and growth trajectory, high overhead against thin agri-input margins |
~ the round that did not close ~
in mid-2025 bharatagri went out to raise a bridge round of about $6 million to $8 million. the pitch was that with another 18-24 months of runway the company could reach operating breakeven on the strength of the fy24 revenue trajectory. investor conversations kept stalling on the same two questions. what is the total addressable market for ai-driven farm advisory in india, and can a small ticket size agri-input e-commerce brand build defensibility against dealer networks that already sell the same seed and fertilizer at similar prices with 60 years of trust behind them.
by september 2025 the round had not closed. no lead had committed. one existing investor was willing to extend some bridge capital but only against a much lower valuation and a founder equity reset the team did not agree to. the runway ran through october. by mid-november the founders called the townhall.
~ how it ended ~
about 37 employees were on the team at the end. the wind-down was reportedly clean by the standards of the 2025 india startup shutdown press. severance was paid where possible, vendor arrears were smaller than what otipy or dunzo had left behind, the app stayed online for a few weeks after operations stopped so farmers who had prepaid could get refunds routed. the domain and the app are still up as static shells as of early 2026. the twitter account posted a farewell note in november 2025 and went silent.
~ the india pattern ~
bharatagri lands in the same 2024-2025 india startup collapse cohort as otipy in fresh produce, dunzo in quick commerce, blusmart in ev ride-hail, piggy in mutual funds. the shared shape is a 2020-2022 raise at zirp-era valuations against a story of category leadership through capital-heavy user acquisition, followed by a 2024-2025 wind-down when the follow-on round did not appear. the agritech-specific lesson analysts pulled from bharatagri is that farmer trust is slow to build and hard to monetize at the ticket sizes that agri-input orders naturally land at. an advisory layer on top of a small e-commerce catalog can hit revenue growth but not the revenue scale needed to escape the fundraising treadmill.
