~ the obituary ~
xsan was the kind of thing post-houses and broadcast newsrooms used. i was not in that demographic. by 2005 i was on a ttnet adsl line in ankara writing university lab reports. the san cluster filesystem on fibre channel was something i first heard about reading apple keynote transcripts and not really understanding what fibre channel was for at the time.
apple announced xsan on 4 january 2005 and started shipping the same day. underneath it was quantum stornext relabeled and bundled with apple's promise raid hardware. an admin tool ran on mac os x server and integrated with active directory. the deal with quantum gave apple a real enterprise san product without writing one. version 2.0 in february 2008 added multisan. version 3.0 in july 2012 was the first to ship inside macos itself.
xsan sold into post-production houses cutting feature films and into broadcast newsrooms running avid workstations. the typical buyer had a rack of xserves next to a fibre channel switch and a stack of promise raids on the other wall. when apple discontinued the xserve in january 2011 the natural xsan customer lost its hardware platform. the product kept shipping for another decade but the use case was shrinking the whole time.

~ the climb ~
xsan version 5.0 in september 2016 shipped inside macos sierra and was the last version anyone calls a major release. there were point updates through 2020 in macos server 5.11.1. the apple support article that explained how to configure xsan kept getting edited as macos versions came and went. the underlying message stayed the same: you can still set this up if you really want to.
~ the day it died ~
on 21 april 2022 apple discontinued macos server. the configuration interface for xsan disappeared from macos server 5.12 the same month. there was no press release because there was nothing left to launch. existing xsan customers could still keep their volumes mounted and the xsanctl command-line tool stayed in macos big sur and later, but the product itself was gone. by 2026 the working xsan installs are the ones already configured before the server interface vanished, run by admins who learned the cli when they had to.
