Apple Pay Later

2023 - 2024
dead us
apple pay later was apple's first attempt to compete with affirm and klarna directly. the service was announced at wwdc 2022, opened as a US-only preview in march 2023, hit general availability in the united states in october 2023, and was killed on 17 june 2024. apple replaced the in-house product with third-party installment loans through affirm in the US and partner banks elsewhere, wired into apple wallet via the global ios 18 installment offering.

apple pay later was US-only at the consumer-payment layer. that means it never reached turkey, never reached most of europe, never reached the markets where i actually pay for things. by 2023 i was in ankara doing edge ai work and using the local turkish bnpl rails when i used bnpl at all. the apple version of the same idea sat behind an american apple id i did not have.

apple announced the product at wwdc in june 2022 as part of the larger apple wallet roadmap. the pitch was that a four-installment, no-interest loan would live inside apple wallet, get underwritten by an apple subsidiary called apple financing llc, and post directly to a user's apple cash balance. it slotted into the same category as affirm and klarna in the united states. preview access opened to invited US users in march 2023. general availability landed in october 2023.

the time from general availability to shutdown was eight months. on 17 june 2024 apple confirmed the product was ending, framed the close as part of a broader installment offering, and said affirm in the US and partner banks elsewhere would carry the bnpl flows inside the apple pay checkout instead. existing apple pay later loans were left to amortize on the same schedule. the wallet UI for new loans flipped over to the partner-bank flow during the ios 18 cycle.

Born2023-10-17 (US-wide general availability after the march 2023 preview)
Peakaround six months of US-only general availability before the june 2024 shutdown call
Killed2024-06-17 (apple announced the end and the affirm partnership the same day)
Lifespanabout eight months in general availability, just under two years from wwdc 2022 announcement
Made byApple Financing LLC, a wholly owned apple subsidiary set up to underwrite the loans
Killed bythe operational cost of running a regulated lender inside apple, plus the affirm partnership that scaled globally

~ what it actually was ~

the structural part nobody wants to think about is that bnpl is a regulated consumer-lending business. apple had set up apple financing llc as the licensed lender. that meant a credit-decisioning team plus the collections plumbing and bureau integration that consumer lending requires. for an eight-month run-in-market product that was a heavy stack to keep online.

the in-house version did give apple some real things. it gave apple direct credit-decision data on apple pay users, a fully-controlled UX inside wallet with no third-party logos in the checkout, and a small float on the lent capital. the partnership version of bnpl gives apple none of those, but it also leaves the credit risk and the regulatory surface with the partner banks. for an apple that was simultaneously fighting the regulatory pressure on apple card, that calculus changed.

~ the day it died ~

the june 17 2024 announcement was unceremonious. apple put a single quote out about the new global installment offering, said new apple pay later loans were no longer available in the US, and pointed press at the affirm partnership instead. there was no shutdown countdown screen, no apology, no public note from the apple financing executives who had spent two years standing the thing up.

the affirm integration shipped in the ios 18 cycle through 2024 and 2025. by mid-2025 a US checkout with apple pay enabled would default to an affirm offer rather than the in-house apple loan, with the apple cash receipt now reflecting the affirm settlement rather than an apple financing balance. the user-facing experience looked almost identical, the underwriting and the regulatory primary key behind it had switched.

~ what survived ~

apple pay later is one of the cleanest examples of an apple product that died not because the product failed but because the strategy underneath it changed. the service onboarded users, the loans performed, the wallet integration worked. apple decided that running a regulated US lender was not worth the operational cost when affirm would do the same thing on its rails and pay for the privilege.

the precedent matters for the next apple financial-services launch. the apple card and the apple cash account both sit on goldman or partner-bank rails now, with apple savings on the same plumbing. the brief experiment of apple originating credit out of an in-house subsidiary lasted eight months in market and ended. the wallet team kept its work, the apple financing team folded back into the wider apple pay org.
