AppHarvest

2018 - 2023

appharvest was a kentucky greenhouse startup that combined climate-adjacent controlled-environment agriculture with an appalachian job-creation pitch. jonathan webb founded it in january 2018. it merged with novus capital in a january 2021 spac deal and listed on nasdaq at roughly a billion dollars. the flagship morehead tomato greenhouse missed yield targets from opening day. by mid-2023 lenders were demanding repayment of about $182 million in secured debt. appharvest filed for chapter eleven on 23 july 2023 and liquidated all five kentucky facilities to secured creditors over the following months.

~ the obituary ~

appharvest never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a kentucky-coded product tied to us federal indoor-agriculture pitches and rust-belt regeneration politics that had no equivalent here. what i knew about it came from us food-tech press in the '21-'23 window, when the spac-listing arc turned into the bankruptcy arc inside eighteen months.

jonathan webb founded appharvest in january 2018 in morehead kentucky, framing it as a play to bring high-tech agriculture to appalachia. the pitch to investors combined two arcs at once. one was climate-adjacent controlled-environment agriculture, which sold well in the 2018-2021 esg-money window. the other was appalachian job creation, which sold to any us political audience that wanted a photograph inside a shiny glass greenhouse.

the money followed the pitch. martha stewart joined the board and jd vance sat on it early. revolution ventures put in from steve case's fund. in january 2021 appharvest merged with novus capital corporation in a spac deal and listed on nasdaq at a valuation around a billion dollars. by the end of that year the first morehead greenhouse was shipping tomatoes to us grocery chains including kroger and walmart.

the operational reality was rougher than the deck implied. the flagship morehead facility ran into yield problems from day one. contract tomato prices at grocery met margin only when yields hit target, and target yields kept missing. by early 2023 the company had missed multiple wall-street quarters and lenders started demanding repayment of the $182 million debt block. on 23 july 2023 appharvest filed for chapter eleven in the southern district of texas. all five kentucky facilities eventually transferred to equilibrium and to a dutch operator called bosch growers over the following months.

~ the climb ~

the story appharvest told in 2020 and 2021 was that indoor high-tech farming answered two problems at once. it would let us grocery chains buy domestically-grown produce twelve months a year, cutting import dependence on mexico. it would also create technical jobs in a part of appalachia that had lost coal and had not found a replacement industry. the pitch was clean enough that it drew celebrity board members who wanted a photograph inside the greenhouse.

the reality inside the greenhouse was different. the morehead flagship was a sixty-acre glass roof over stacked hydroponic tomato beds. tomatoes are one of the hardest indoor crops to run economically. lighting and climate costs eat the yield gain, and the price the crop clears at retail is not high enough to justify the capital. bowery farming and plenty had reached the same conclusion with leafy greens by then. tomatoes were a harder version of that same problem.

~ what got buried with it ~

the appharvest liquidation ran through late 2023 and 2024. equilibrium, the largest secured creditor, credit-bid $113 million and took the morehead and richmond tomato farms. bosch growers took the somerset strawberry and cucumber facility. the berea facility got transferred to a partner. the brand went with the corporate shell into wind-down. jonathan webb had stepped down as ceo months before the filing.

grist ran a long piece after the collapse describing conditions inside the morehead greenhouse as hell on earth. the reporting covered ambient heat above 100 fahrenheit at floor level, understaffing, and injury rates that exceeded federal averages for controlled-environment agriculture. the celebrity board and the appalachian job-creation narrative had covered a working environment that was closer to a warehouse job than to the technical greenhouse work the marketing promised.

~ the long tail ~

appharvest sits in a cluster with bowery farming and aerofarms as the failure canon of us vertical and controlled-environment agriculture between 2023 and 2025. all three raised over a hundred million dollars each on a capital-heavy indoor-infrastructure model that only paid back at premium consumer prices. once the interest-rate environment shifted and once premium prices normalized, the whole segment collapsed on the same timeline.

the lesson the food-tech press keeps writing about is that indoor agriculture at retail scale needs either much cheaper energy or a much higher wholesale price. tomatoes, the crop appharvest bet on, have neither. by 2026 the remaining survivors in controlled-environment agriculture are much smaller shops serving high-end restaurant supply or niche greens categories. the ambition of feeding grocery chains from appalachian glass roofs is now a case study in what does not work.
