~ the obit ~
by the time crucible landed on steam, the hero shooter shelf was already crowded and mostly settled. overwatch had four years of head start, apex was the free-to-play champion, valorant had just launched into the same window. amazon showed up with a third-person team shooter that had no dedicated healer or tank, three different modes that felt like three different games glued together, and matches that took twenty minutes to resolve.
it was amazon game studios' first serious pc release, built over six years by relentless studios in seattle on the lumberyard engine. launch day was 20 may 2020, on steam, free-to-play, no invite required. the reviews came in mixed to bad: 56 on metacritic, four out of ten from ign, five from gamespot. the concurrent player count fell off the cliff you would expect for a launch that quiet.
on 30 june 2020, six weeks after release, relentless pulled crucible off the store and put it back into closed beta. the framing was that the team wanted to rework the game with community input. the version that came back was smaller in scope. one mode instead of three. no fresh audience. on 9 october 2020 amazon announced cancellation. matchmaking stopped later that month. custom game servers went dark at noon pacific on 9 november.
i did not play crucible. by 2020 my gaming time was mostly single-player and short sessions after work. a twenty-minute team shooter with a slow ramp was not the pitch. the honest read is that the whole hero shooter category had closed its door on new entrants around 2018, and no first release from a new studio was going to force it open again.

~ what it actually was ~
a free-to-play team shooter with ten characters called hunters, matches on the same alien planet, three modes: alpha hunters (battle royale-ish), harvester command (control points), heart of hives (pve boss with pvp mixed in). no traditional class roles. healing was a pickup item that anyone could grab. movement was floaty, hit registration was inconsistent at launch, and the map was overgrown with foliage that made the third-person camera fight the player as much as the enemies did.
~ the un-launch ~
the 30 june beta rewind was the interesting part. games get pulled from stores after cancellation. games rarely get pulled from stores while the developer still plans to keep making them. amazon called it a "technical alpha", refunded skin purchases, and asked existing players to stay. the community that stayed was small enough that internal amazon math never got better. ten weeks later the whole thing was over.
~ what survived ~
amazon kept new world in the pipeline and released it in 2021, at which point new world had its own set of problems but at least it stuck. lumberyard the engine was open-sourced as open 3d engine in 2021. relentless studios kept operating and moved onto other amazon internal work. the crucible name is now free for someone else. the game itself has no legal way to run: no offline mode, no fan servers, no leaked binary that anyone has kept alive. it is one of the cleanest deaths a shipped multiplayer title has ever had.
