~ the goodbye ~
amazon amp went live on 8 march 2022 as a live-radio app where anyone could play dj over an amazon music catalog. it needed to launch in early 2021. clubhouse had already flattened out. by the time amp reached testflight the peer graveyard was forming.
amazon threw money at it. the launch lineup pulled in nicki minaj, big boi, travis barker, pusha t, lil yachty. a creator fund shipped in september 2022 with what amazon called millions of dollars set aside for host payments. none of it converted. lifetime downloads reached 1.3 million per data.ai. monthly active users hovered around 700,000 in july 2023, a figure amazon disputed as too high.
steve boom, amazon's head of digital music, sent the internal memo on 4 october 2023. the decision "only became clear after months of careful consideration determining the investments amazon wants to make for the future." the app was gone by the end of the month. staff had already been cut nearly in half during the 2022 layoff wave, so the second half was residual clean-up.
i was 38 in march 2022 and had never used clubhouse. live-audio was a us-english invite-only phenomenon that peaked and folded before any network effect reached ankara. amp was worse: clubhouse plus a licensed music catalog that was already regional and fragmented in turkey. i saw the launch headline on techmeme, filed it as another live-audio experiment, forgot about it inside a week.

| Born | 8 March 2022, invite beta on iOS |
|---|---|
| Peak | ~700K MAU July 2023 per Bloomberg (amazon disputed the figure) |
| Killed | 31 October 2023 |
| Lifespan | ~19 months |

| Killed by | clubhouse-era category collapse, low music-service conversion |
~ how the category died ~
meta closed live audio rooms in june 2022. reddit killed reddit talk in march 2023, and spotify killed greenroom in september 2023 one month before amp. amp was the last of the big four clubhouse clones to ship and the last to fold, so it also had the shortest visible arc. every one of them was chasing clubhouse's early-2021 pandemic moment, which was fading before the competitors could get through app review.
~ the celebrity gamble ~
the pitch was that professional djs and musicians would run scheduled shows, and regular listeners would drop in like it was terrestrial radio you could talk back to. that framing sold to nicki minaj and big boi. it did not sell to the audience amazon needed, which was people who would use amp often enough to also convert into amazon music subscribers. per the internal memo, new music signups from amp were in the low thousands.
~ the aftermath ~
amazon music the brand still ships. amp does not. boom's memo did not name a successor product for the live-audio space, because amazon had made the call that the space itself was not a place to spend the next year of budget. the celebrity djs kept their day jobs. the residual team went to other amazon music work.
