~ the goodbye ~
zopa never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a uk-coded product tied to fca operating rules and sterling consumer credit. peer-to-peer lending existed as a headline i skimmed in the fintech press around 2010-2015, one of those categories that seemed inevitable and then quietly stopped being inevitable.
zopa was founded in march 2005 by richard duvall and four other alumni of egg, the uk online bank. the idea was direct: individual lenders would fund small unsecured loans to individual borrowers, and zopa would handle the credit scoring and repayment plumbing in between. the spread was thinner than a traditional bank's. by 2007 the model had been copied by prosper and lending club in the us. by the mid 2010s zopa was the largest p2p lender in the uk.
the retail loan book grew to around six billion pounds in cumulative volume across sixteen years. that number is smaller than any full-scale uk consumer bank would consider material. p2p was never actually a threat to bank spreads, only to the assumption that consumer credit needed a bank. covid changed the calculus. default rates rose and the fca tightened the rules for retail p2p investors. by 2021 zopa had already redirected its ambition into its own bank. on 7 december 2021 the p2p platform closed and zopa the bank absorbed the retail portfolio at full value.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | March 2005 in London, by Richard Duvall and four other Egg alumni |
|---|---|
| Peak | About £6 billion in lifetime P2P loan volume by 2021 |
| Killed | 7 December 2021, P2P wind-down effective |
| Lifespan | 16 years, 9 months as a peer-to-peer platform |
| Made by | Zopa Ltd., Richard Duvall (ex-Egg CEO) plus four co-founders |
| Killed by | Pandemic default spike plus the parent bank pivot |
~ the actual end ~
the wind-down was clean by industry standards. investors got their capital back and the outstanding loans were bought by zopa bank at par rather than sold to a distressed buyer. there was no dramatic collapse. retail lenders were paid out through january 2022. no bankruptcy and no lost pensions. very few p2p platforms have wound down that cleanly. wonga did not. lendy did not.
~ what it became ~
zopa is still a company in 2026. it just runs a proper uk digital bank now, taking retail deposits and offering unsecured personal loans. the p2p brand identity got quietly retired. the original 2005 pitch of routing capital directly from savers to borrowers via a lightweight platform is now dead as a mainstream uk consumer product, and the bank that killed the p2p arm was the same one that had once been its p2p arm.
