Zoome

2007 - 2011

zoome was japan's second-largest video-sharing site through the late 2000s, sitting behind niconico as the smaller alternative with cleaner h.264 uploads. acca networks launched it on 30 january 2007 and spun it into its own subsidiary in june 2008. it absorbed the stage6 refugees after 2008 and a chunk of the hatsune miku vocaloid community after the niconico mad-movies purges. servers went dark on 31 august 2011 with no farewell post.

~ the last words ~

zoome was a japanese-language video-share that never had a landing pad outside the japan-side of the internet. i was on youtube by the 2007 window it launched into, in the mix of turkish content and english subtitles the timeline was serving me then. what i saw of zoome was second-hand later on. the site name showed up in vocaloid subculture write-ups and the occasional cross-post to nico-adjacent blogs.

acca networks co., ltd. launched zoome on 30 january 2007 as an in-house project. by mid-2008 the video property had been spun into its own subsidiary, zoome co., ltd. the pitch was cleaner encoding than niconico plus a friendlier upload flow. zoome carried h.264 / mpeg-4 avc from the start, at a moment when niconico was still on the older flash-video pipeline that carried its early growth.

the real thing that happened to zoome was the migration wave. in early 2008 divx, inc. shut down stage6 and the hd-video-in-a-browser crowd went looking for the next divx-friendly host. zoome accepted the traffic. through 2009 to 2010 the hatsune miku vocaloid community, which had grown up on niconico and clashed with the site's mad-movies moderation cycles, kept a parallel presence on zoome. crypton future media's official tdki vocaloid circle showed up there. so did a large chunk of the mmd animator community.

honestly. the japanese-language internet had its own weight and its own reasons for choosing hosts. zoome's shutdown notice went up in mid-2011 and the servers went dark on 31 august. no press release i can find. the ja.wikipedia entry gives it in a single line.

~ what it was ~

zoome ran with the shape of a slightly less crowded niconico. you signed up with an email address, uploaded a video, tagged it, and shared it into circles that functioned as small user-owned rooms. the on-screen text comment layer that made niconico famous was not there in the same overlay-on-video form. zoome kept the comment thread separate, closer to the youtube convention.

the h.264 encoding was the tech pitch. at the time japanese video hosts were mostly flash video at low bitrate. zoome accepted higher-quality uploads and paid the bandwidth for it. that decision is what made it the natural home for the hd-video refugees after stage6.

~ the day it died ~

the shutdown was staged across the summer of 2011. account signups were frozen, then upload disabled, then playback wound down. the final cutoff came on 31 august. no big farewell post, no company statement about numbers, just the standard shape of a japanese web-service closure notice on the front page.

back then. the timing sat inside a larger 2010-2012 window of japanese web-2 sub-product deaths. gree and mixi were pivoting to mobile games while ameba was consolidating around pigg and the blog side. the standalone video-share tier below niconico had no clear business path against the rising smartphone-era competition. youtube's japan business had grown enough to absorb the casual viewer, and niconico had locked in the paying-subscriber core. zoome had neither.

~ the next chapter ~

the mmd animator community, which had used zoome as a mirror for niconico content, mostly migrated back to niconico proper or spread out to youtube once the vocaloid rights position stabilized. still. the vocaloid archive that had lived on zoome went dark, and the fan-preservation efforts around it were slower than the ones for stage6 in the west.

zoome's real long-tail is invisible unless you already knew the site. the japan-language wikipedia entry gets updated once every few years. the english-language coverage barely names the founder. the site's real footprint was in the small subculture that used it, and that subculture has since dispersed across a dozen other feeds.
